Vendor Challenge Workshop
Realistic Simulation of a Flexible Mechanism - Several Approaches By Simulation Software Suppliers
Presented at NAFEMS World Congress May 22-25, 2007 Vancouver, BC Canada
Lee Krueger, John Vandeventer - Boeing Commercial Airplanes
A structural/mechanical system analysis/simulation of a basic
Preliminary Design (PD) model of a landing gear was proposed for
solution to suppliers of analysis and simulation software. The goal
of this exercise was to provide NAFEMS World Congress attendees a
look at different processes for solving a realistic
design/simulation problem using a variety of design and analysis
tools.
Each participant was provided basic geometry, energy absorption
data and external load data needed to simulate an aircraft landing
gear drop test and fatigue test. The performance criteria for
the system, including reaction loads, maximum stress levels, a
weight target, were provided to the participants. Each
participant used this information with their preferred
design/analysis product simulation tools and processes, to develop
their recommended final product that meets the Boeing provided
performance criteria.
The problem solution made use of vendor simulation tools that span
the technologies of kinematics, nonlinear finite element analysis,
optimization, and multibody dynamics simulation. The
participants presented their solution process, tools and results of
their work at a round-table venue that included a
question-and-answer segment with the NAFEMS World Congress
attendees.
It should be noted that this exercise was not a competition or a
benchmark problem. Results of the individual analyses were
not compared and attempts to show superiority of one application
product over another was not permitted.
