NAFEMS Announces Winners of 2005 Student Awards
International Association Recognises Analysis Students
Glasgow
, UK
, September 20th
2005 -
NAFEMS, The International Association for the Engineering Analysis
Community, has announced the winners in its 2005 Student Awards
competition. Sponsored and supported by ABAQUS, ANSYS and
MSC.Software, the competition attracted an extremely high standard
of entry from many higher education establishments.
Paul Chester, from the University of Surrey, won the award for “Most Innovative Use of FEA or CFD”
for a project titled “Investigation into the behaviour of grouted connections in
offshore wind turbines in response to boat impacts.”
The award for “Most Practical Use of either FEA or CFD”
went to Paul Hodgson of the University of Hertfordshire for his
project, “CFD of a Radial Turbine”
, and Paul Clement of the University of Bath won the award for “Best presented report related to FEA or CFD”
with his final year project “Is the Internal Architecture of Bone Structurally
Optimised?”
.
The awards were presented by Tim Morris, Chief Operating Officer of
NAFEMS, at a ceremony on August 5th
2005 in London. “The future of engineering analysis is in
the hands of the students who are learning and applying the
techniques”, commented Mr Morris. “NAFEMS has a
responsibility to ensure that the engineering analysis community as
a whole continues to develop and work towards consistent and
recognized standards – that should begin at the very start of
an analyst’s career. We are delighted to reward these
excellent final year projects – indeed, the entries were of
such high standard that awards could have been given to most of the
submissions.”
Tony Kent, Director of Marketing (EMEA) from MSC.Software, said “
MSC.Software have a long-standing partnership with NAFEMS and
actively contribute to Steering Committees and Working Groups
around the world. We were therefore extremely pleased to
participate as sponsors in the 2005 NAFEMS Student Awards, and to
meet the authors of the winning entries.” He added
“Today’s commercial simulation technology is almost
unrecognisable from the historical roots on which organisations
such as MSC.Software and NAFEMS were originally founded, and this
contemporary approach was evident in each of the presentations made
by the winning students. In addition to an obvious mastery of the
academic concepts involved, I personally was impressed to hear
these young analysts talking knowledgably in terms of integrated
applications and realised business value. I am sure that this
outlook will serve each of the winners well, and all at
MSC.Software wish them success in their future careers."
“As General Manager of ABAQUS UK I was delighted to be able
to sponsor the inaugural NAFEMS Student Award, and to recognize the
quality of the work submitted by all the entrants, in particular
that of the three winners.” agrees Alan Prior of ABAQUS.
“Many companies will say that the growth of CAE in their
design and development process is hampered by poor CAD geometry,
inadequate interfaces between products, lack of computer resources
and so on. But all will acknowledge that a lack of skilled analysts
can be the biggest hurdle to overcome. And so we as software
vendors have a clear interest in promoting the development of
bright young analysts, encouraging their involvement in simulation
technology, and raising the awareness of the benefits of analysis
and simulation in both academia and industry. NAFEMS, as an
independent body covering the whole of the engineering analysis
community industry, provides the ideal framework for this activity.
We look forward to continuing our involvement in the NAFEMS Student
Awards in future years.”
The winners each received a cheque for £500, as well as a
commemorative award and certificate at the ceremony and dinner in
the Institute of Physics in London, which was attended by the
winners as well as Tim Morris of NAFEMS, David Barry from ANSYS,
Alan Prior from ABAQUS and Tony Kent from MSC.Software.
