This document provides details of 3 benchmark tests of finite element assemblies in forced vibration. It was commissioned by the NAFEMS Steering Committee and produced by WS Atkins Engineering Sciences under the direction of the Dynamics Working Group, following on from a previous contract related to free vibration benchmarks.

The object of this document is to provide in succinct form a set of tests that collectively may be used to assess the accuracy of linear elastic finite element assemblies undergoing damped forced vibration. Only linear elastic isotropic, initially stress free, assemblies are considered and attention is focused on the most popular types of finite element in commercial use.

A set of benchmark tests of finite elements in forced vibration is presented. The tests cover beam, thin shell and thick shell element assemblies subject to harmonic, periodic, transient and random loading. Full details of each test are given in a six-page group, the first page covering the free vibration solution, the second giving details of the elements used in the free and forced vibration benchmarks, and the following four covering each of the four types of forcing function.
