STRESS DISCONTINUITIES STRESS ERROR ESTIMATES

Lines along which the stresses are discontinous. If the geometry or loading changes abruptly along a line then the true stress can be discontinous. In a finite element solution the element assumptions means that the stresses will generally be discontinuous across element boundaries. The degree of discontinuity can then be used to form an estimate of the error in the stress within the finite element calculation.
