Standalone and add-on tools for FEApackages: Abaqus, ANSYS, Nastran

Autodesk Helius PFA is an add-on for commercial FEA programs and provides multiscale simulation that determines failure at the constituent level while also predicting structural response at the composite level. Multiplefailure criteria are available to enable users to view damage effects in the fibre and matrix and identify multiple modes of failure including delamination.A composite-specific material degradation method has been applied to handle the nonlinear, progressive failure of composites while improving solution convergence and simulation run time. Helius PFA supports multiple analysis conditions, including dynamic and fatigue loading and supports multiple material types including chopped and continuous fibres, unidirectional lamina and various woven fabrics.

Autodesk® Helius Composite is a standalone package that offers a collection of tools for conceptual design and analysis with composites.Users can select from an expandable library of materials to build lamina and laminates, and then calculate their material properties using fundamental tools such as micromechanics and Composite Laminate Theory. The Utilities menu contains several additional tools such as calculators for determining fabric thickness, radius of curvature and spring back.

Helius PFA

Helius PFA is anadd-on for commercial FEA programs that is designed to improve accuracy, efficiency and convergence in structural analysis of composite materials. Atits core, Helius PFA provides an efficient multiscale simulation that determines failure at the constituent level while also predicting structural,composite-level response. Multiple failure criteria are available to enable users to view damage effects at the fiber and matrix level and identify multiple modes of failure including delamination. A composite-specific material degradation method has been applied to handle the nonlinear, progressive failure of composites while improving solution convergence and simulation runtime. Helius PFA supports multiple analysis conditions, including explicit and fatigue loading and supports multiple material types including chopped and continuous fibers, unidirectional lamina and various woven fabrics. Helius’s Advanced Material Exchange enables structural simulation of the as-manufactured condition of fiber filled plastic parts through import of fiber orientation data from Autodesk® Moldflow®.

Helius Composite

Autodesk®Helius Composite offers a collection tools for conceptual design and analysis with composites. Users can select from an expandable library of materials to build lamina and laminates, and then calculate their material properties using fundamental tools such as micromechanics and Composite Laminate Theory.Multiple options are available to determine the laminate’s strength including first ply failure or even progressive failure with advanced criteria such as Hashin, Christensen, and MCT. It offers modules to test laminates in a simple structure- such as a plate, tube, beam or sandwich panel - under different loading scenarios. The Utilities menu contains several additional tools such as calculators for determining fabric thickness, radius of curvature and spring back. A recent addition includes an interactive tool for designing bolted connections.  Helius Composite also has development technology, recently recognized with a JEC Innovation Award, which allows users to “drape” their laminate over complex 3D geometries and conduct plate bending analysis.

Autodesk Moldflow

Autodesk® Moldflow® simulates the plastic injection molding process. It provides tools that help predict, optimize and validate the design of plastic parts, injection molds and extrusion dies. For fiber filled plastic parts, Moldflow is able to determine the fiber orientation and material properties resulting from the injection molding process. This information can be exported to an external FEA package for further structural analysis of the as-manufactured composite material. Specifically, Helius PFA is able to map the fiber orientation and any process-induced stresses from the Moldflow simulation onto the structural FEA mesh – enabling a more realistic model of the fiber reinforced plastic part.
