Data are irrupted in our lives, and engineering sciences are not the exception. At the beginning, thousands of years ago, was the kingdom of data, then models progressively substituted data,that was compressed into short mathematical expressions able to generate an immense amount of data and to respond to the external queries.

However, many times modeling-based simulation encounters serious difficulties to address real-time decision-making despite the recent significant advances in model order reduction. Sometimes data coming from simulation must be transformed into information and knowledge prior to proceeding to make decisions; sometimes model parameters are not evident and the uncorrelated parameters must be extracted from the massive and intricate data, other times it is preferable to conduct simulation directly from data by minimizing as much as possible models whose validity remains in some cases uncertain, limited or too complex for encompassing accuracy and fast responses. Other times only data (images, time series, …) is available and from it information must be extracted for controlling systems and processes … 

Thus, data is renewing its old leadership in the long history of sciences and engineering, history that should be rewritten by considering the intimate link and unimaginable possibilities that the combination of data a physical modelling can offer within the framework of the so-called 4th industrial revolution.

Some names of the protagonists of this new revolution are: Big-data, data analytics, data-mining, deep-learning, manifold-learning, machine-learning, data-driven, nonlinear dimensionality reduction, …. and all them are making possible to realise some past dreams and imagine other never until now imagined.
