CFD for Structural Designers & Analysts

Structural engineers often need to resort to more sophisticated thermal fluid simulations to obtain boundary conditions, loading, performance, etc. for their designs and analyses. Additionally, many engineering problems include strong interaction between structure and fluid.

This course aims to introduce the essential principles of fluid dynamics, important flow phenomena, and basics of Computational Fluid Dynamics process to structural engineers and how CFD can be beneficial for their multidisciplinary problems.

Course Details

The CFD for Structural Designers and Analysts course provides the principles of fluid dynamics, turbulence, and heat transfer relevant to structural analyses. The material include simple and practical examples and case studies.

Course syllabus breakdown

  • Background to loads and boundary Condition calculation in structural analysis
  • Coupling between Structural and CFD simulation
  • Definitions and governing principles of fluid dynamics
  • Flow classifications
  • Important concepts and phenomena
  • Introduction to CFD
  • Turbulence
  • Introduction to heat transfer
  • Review of typical project analysis requirements and the processes available

Who Should Attend

The target audience for this course is structural engineers, designers, and analysts aiming to incorporate CFD into their everyday practice. Structural engineers not directly using Computational Fluid Dynamics, who need to work with or support CFD analysts will greatly benefit from this course.

  • Review of loads and boundary condition calculation in structural analysis
  • Definitions and governing principles of fluid dynamics
  • How CFD works
  • Flow Types:
    • Steady / transient flows
    • Viscous / inviscid flows
    • Laminar / turbulent flows
    • Compressible / incompressible flows

Session 2

  • Concept: Boundary layer
  • Concept: Pressure loss & recovery
  • Concept: Flow separation
  • Concept: Shocks
  • Flow Types: Multiphase flows
  • Heat transfer

  • Structural and CFD simulation Coupling

Course Process and Details

This course is completely code independent.
No software is required.

E-learning courses are great alternatives and complements for continued education as they offer convenience and eliminate the need to travel. Strong effort is made for the course to be software neutral. However, examples from some of the more well known and popular simulation cases and software will be used throughout the session.  Full notes are provided for the attendees.

Students will join the audio portion of the meetings by utilizing the VoIP (i.e. headset connected to the computer via headphone and microphone jacks) or by calling into a standard toll line. If you are interested in additional pricing to call-in using a toll-free line, please send an email to: e-learning @ .

Feedback from former e-Learning students:

"This course did everything right. From organization to presentation to interaction, this is a good model for what online training should be."

"Super! Doesn't get better than this. Good idea to start having e-Learning courses."

"I'm really happy not to pay a big fraction of my annual training budget to airlines and hotels. A BIG plus to e-learning."

Special Note(s):

Telephony surcharges may apply for attendees who are located outside of North America, South America and Europe. These surcharges are related to individuals who join the audio portion of the web-meeting by calling in to the provided toll/toll-free teleconferencing lines. We have made a VoIP option available so anyone attending the class can join using a headset (headphones w/ microphone) connected to the computer. There is no associated surcharge to utilize the VoIP option, and is actually encouraged to ensure NAFEMS is able to keep the e-Learning course fees as low as possible. Please send an email to the e-Learning coordinator (e-learning @ ) to determine if these surcharges may apply to your specific case.

Just as with a live face-to-face training course, each registration only covers one person. If you plan to register a large group (10+), please send an email to e-learning @ in advance for group discounts.
