Bridging the Scales: From Simulation to Structural Assessment

A seminar on Multiscale Damage Modelling

Multiscale methods are currently one of the fundamental tools for studying the overall constitutive behaviour of heterogeneous or multi-phase materials. Over the recent years, a number of intriguing multiscale computational approaches has been introduced including homogenization methods, multiscale finite element methods as well as mesh-free and particle methods with the objective of improving the accuracy and remit of continuum based methods.

The main objective of this seminar is to form a platform for idea exchange and knowledge dissemination concerning the latest developments in the field of multiscale analysis procedures for solid structures with a particular interest on recent advances in the simulation of damage processes. It is intended to be of relevance to practising engineers and will be focusing on length scales from nanometre to metre. It further aims at establishing a discussion forum for advanced multiscale computational techniques and at identifying associated research challenges. Topics relevant to the seminar are, but are not limited to, implementations and algorithmic solutions for multiscale analysis of:- 

  • Micro-mechanical constitutive behaviour
  • Scale bridging- Brittle and ductile damage processes
  • Predictive multiscale modelling
  • Verification and validation of multiscale methods

Contributions pertaining to the implementation of such methods on industrial applications, are especially welcomed.


Call for Presentations

In the first instance, abstracts of 300-600 words should be submitted for consideration by Friday, 3rd August 2018.

Abstracts must be clearly marked with presentation title, author's name, organisation, address, phone numbers and email address.

Authors whose abstracts are accepted will be asked to prepare an extended abstract (typically 2-4 pages) and a PowerPoint presentation - full written papers are not required
