PSE Certification Levels


Applicants can gain certification in any number of Technical Areas. Note that an initial PSE Certification application must contain one of the two core modules (Core Finite Element Analysis or Core Computational Fluid Dynamics). The number of Technical Areas that can be covered in a single certification interview is limited to 4, candidates applying for more than 4 Technical Areas will be required to attend multiple certification interviews

For each Technical Area, competency can be claimed at one of the following levels:

Entry Level 

Certification award based on the PSE application form

  • Is carrying out work using engineering analysis and simulation applicable to the technical area in which the candidate is seeking to gain entry level.
  • Is working in an industrial environment
  • The candidate should be being trained and mentored in the effective usage of engineering analysis and simulation tools
  • The candidate should be able to work in a supervised capacity when provided with clear guidelines

Standard Level 

Certification award based on PSE application form and interview

  • Has sufficient knowledge and comprehension of theory to employ available software tools in a safe and effective manner as specified by the competency statements found in the PSE Competency Tracker at Standard Level.
  • The candidate should be able to employ available software tools in a safe and effective manner and work in an independently following a well-defined procedure without supervision.
  • Is aware of their own limitations when faced with new or novel problems.
  • Conducts appropriate verification and validation to activities to ensure that the results that are produced are fit for purpose.

Advanced Level 

Certification award based on PSE application form and interview

  • The candidate has sufficient knowledge and comprehension of theory to allow safe and effective use of application software tools as specified by the competency statements at STANDARD & ADVANCED level in the relevant PSE Technical Area
  • The candidate conducts appropriate verification and validation to activities to ensure that the results that are produced are fit for purpose.
  • The candidate is able to work independently on a range of complex and novel tasks.
  • The candidate plans analysis strategies and validation studies.
  • The candidate is acknowledged as an expert.
  • The candidate is able to use skills and expertise to mentor others.
