Overview

From the FEA infancy in the 1960’s, Simulation and Analysis industrial relevance and recognition has continuously grown, especially in the aerospace sector. In the last two decades, engineering practice has been progressively moving from a test and experience based design to simulation-based design. Indeed, an efficient integration of simulation in the product design and development is bringing a clear competitive advantage with the following potential business benefits :

  • Lead time reduction
  • Improved and earlier performance optimisation
  • Development cost reduction (e.g. on physical testing) or cost avoidance
  • First-time-right design (e.g. no costly late redesigns)...

However, there is a considerable challenge to fully cash these benefits in the present context of globalisation and massive technological innovation. Among key success factors is the implementation of Competence Management, a mandatory condition to ensure robust simulation processes in the whole supply chain.

The presentation identifies key challenges and trends in the aero industry. It highlights the growing importance of simulation management in the context of an increasing role of simulation in the aircraft design and certification. Finally, competence management needs in the aero sector are presented.

Jean-François Imbert

Jean-François Imbert J.F. Imbert has 40 years experience in Aerospace Structures Engineering, CAE/ numerical simulation and capability development.

He is presently Director of SIMconcept SARL an independent consulting company specialized in CAE/simulation.

From 2008 to 2009, he chaired the Simulation Task Force of the EADS PLM Harmonization Programme

In his last position at Airbus, up to 2007, Jean-François IMBERT has been Vice- President Engineering, Head of Structure Analysis, with accountability on Structure Analysis and capability harmonization, improvement, integration and support for all Airbus Sites, and major aircraft programmes (A380, A400M and A350... )

Prior to this, he was Head of Structure Analysis in Aerospatiale Aircraft Branch, Toulouse, where he revisited and developed new Stress capabilities mainly for the LR programme: A340/500& 600.

Before joining Aerospatiale he was Deputy Director Head of R and D, Engineering Services at Intespace (one of the major European Test Organizations) and previously Head of the Structures Department of the French Space Agency (CNES).

He is the author of many papers in Aerospace Structures Engineering, and CAE/Analysis and a book on Finite Element Structure Analysis. He was formerly professor of Finite Element Analysis at Ecole Nationale Superieure de l’Aeronautique et de l’Espace (Sup Aero Toulouse).

He has been Chairman of several Technical Committees including the CEAS Structures & Materials Committee, the IAF Material& Structures Committee and Expert for several French and European organizations (EC, French Ministry of Research, Aerospatiale Corporate Expert...). He is presently Emeritus Member A.A.A.F.

He was graduated from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Métiers, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace in Paris and the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena (USA).
