Modeling & Simulation for the Nuclear Industry

Modeling & Simulation for the Nuclear Industry

In 2010 NAFEMS hosted the seminar ‘Delivering CAE for the Nuclear Energy Industry'.In the following four years Nuclear Energy has rarely been out of the news.

The Fukushima disaster in 2011 has resulted in revision to safety guides that require consideration of combination of extreme events. Meanwhile, in order to cope with power demands, life extension of existing power plants is needed as they are approaching or have exceed their original design life. Computational modelling and simulation will help the nuclear industry to meet these challenges.

On a more positive note, European Union regulators have given a green light to plans to construct a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset. The EDF Energy build plant will be the first new nuclear plant to be built in the UK in almost 20 years. This coupled with the announcement in 2012, of seven year plant life extensions for two of the UK’s fleet of nuclear reactors, ensure that nuclear power will play a very significant role in Britain’s energy future.

Seminar Objective

The seminar provided an opportunity to learn about the current Modelling and Simulation methods that are used in the Nuclear Energy Industry.Attendees received presentations from industry experts.
