We hear much about how artificial intelligence (AI) transforms our jobs and has the potential to replace us. Large Language Models like ChatGPT regularly pass Turing Tests, meaning a human can’t tell they’re interacting with a machine. It seems natural that such powerful technology would also be applied to simulation engineering. In fact, there are hundreds of papers applying AI to simulation problems, and industry outlets like Benchmark often cover the topic as well.
At the same time, we don’t see many applications in everyday simulation work yet. In other words, we’re left with two seemingly contradictory questions about AI in simulation engineering:
• “Is AI going to simulate for me?”
• “Is AI even useful to simulation engineering?”
