Sensitivity Analysis of the Inherent Strain Approach for the Buckling of a Thin Structure

The October 2024 issue of NAFEMS Benchmark Magazine features a benchmark example that compares experimental measurements and numerical simulations of a powder bed fusion (PBF) thin structure.

Using the inherent strain approach on the same benchmark component, TWI have systematically examined the influence of mesh refinement, element types, boundary conditions, and material and geometry assumptions. O​liver Found, Simulation and Modelling Engineer at TWI
  • Oliver Found graduated with a PhD from the University of Sheffield in May 2024.
  • His PhD topic was researching magnetic architectures in electric motors for use in the automotive industry.
  • He joined as a modelling and simulation engineer at TWI in October 2023.
  • His work at TWI has included structural, thermo-mechanical, electromagnetic, CFD and machine learning modelling.
D​r Anas Yaghi, Principal Modelling & Simulation Engineer at TWI
  • Anas Yaghi obtained his BEng and then his PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Nottingham in 1993.
  • He worked as a senior research fellow in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the same university until 2012.
  • Following that, he worked at the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry as a senior research engineer for eight years.
  • He has worked as a principal modelling and simulation engineer at TWI (UK) since July 2023.
  • Anas’ main technical specialities are stress analysis, structural integrity assessment, and numerical modelling and simulation, particularly of high-value thermo-mechanical manufacturing processes, such as welding and additive manufacturing.
  • He has been the vice-chair of NAFEMS Manufacturing Process Simulation Working Group since 2016.
  • Over the years, Anas has published more than 50 technical papers in international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
