Overview of NASA Glenn Research Center - Joyce Dever

Joyce Dever

Ms. Joyce Dever is Chief of the Materials and Structures Division at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) where she is providing leadership of the division’s work in materials, structures, and mechanisms for extreme aerospace environments. She has over 36 years of experience at GRC. She began her career investigating the effects of the space environment on spacecraft materials where her work contributed to the selection of materials used on thermal control systems for the International Space Station and the Hubble Space Telescope. She then served in supervisory positions overseeing research and technology development in areas including aerospace environment effects, protective coatings, and advanced aerospace alloys. She has authored over 65 publications. She holds a Master of Science degree in materials science and engineering from Case Western Reserve University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Cleveland State University.

Join us on Day Two of the Aerospace Event for a tour of the NASA Glen Research Center. We will have the opportunity to see 3-5 of these facilities:

10x10 Supersonic Wind Tunnel - The 10- by 10-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel (10×10) is the largest and fastest wind tunnel facility at NASA’s Glenn Research Center and is specifically designed to test supersonic propulsion components from inlets and nozzles to full-scale jet and rocket engines. The 10×10 can be run in aerodynamic (closed-loop) cycle or propulsion (open-loop) cycle. It can also run at subsonic test conditions in aerodynamic and propulsion cycles. Subsonic test conditions range from 5 to 240 knots (Mach 0.36) and altitudes up to 50,000 feet.

Graphics Visualization Lab (GVIS) - a unique lab that develops graphic visualizations from data and models to provide researchers, scientists, engineers and others with a visual tool to develop solutions for their work. The Lab supports the visualization of a wide variety of 3D data and models such as CAD, point clouds and volume data. We are capable of high-impact data visualization, web-based visualization, time-accurate data representation, and designing and testing CAD models in virtual reality.

Simulated Lunar Operations (SLOPE) – The SLOPE lab is a unique indoor laboratory designed to mimic lunar and planetary surface operations. The lab contains sever large soil bins for rover testing, including an adjustable tilt-bed as well as equipment for evaluating the performance of tires, excavation tools and other vehicle components.

Zero Gravity Research Facility (Zero-G) – World’s largest drop tower used to put experiments in simulated weightlessness. The facility is used by investigators from around the world to study the effects of microgravity on physical phenomena such as combustion, fluid physics, biotechnology and materials science.

The tour will be held on September 4th.Shuttles will transport attendees from the Crowne Plaza Hotel between 8:00 and 8:30 am (to be finalized prior to the date) to the NASA Glen Research Center. We will have a brief presentation by a NASA representative and then proceed with the tours. The shuttles will then leave by 12:00 to transport attendees to either the Crown Plaza Hotel or Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Attendees are encouraged to eat breakfast at the hotel before boarding the shuttles. There is an additional cost for the tour of $45 toward the cost of the shuttle transportation which should be paid at registration. If you originally opt out of the tour and then decide to attend, let us know and we will ensure you are included.

Because the NASA Glen Research Center is a restricted US Government facility, the tour is open to US citizens or persons holding a U.S Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card. Instructions on submitting identification for security clearance will be sent to the tour registrants.
