What Simulation Engineers Need to Know About MBSE – Bridging Two Worlds

What Simulation Engineers Need to Know About MBSE – Bridging Two Worlds

Tuesday, 11 November 2025 | Online

07:00 (Los Angeles) | 10:00 (New York)
15:00 (London) | 16:00 (Berlin)

The growing adoption of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) presents both opportunities and challenges for the simulation community. As organizations strive for more integrated digital engineering workflows, Simulation Engineers are increasingly expected to align with MBSE practices—yet the terminology, methods, and objectives can differ significantly between the two domains.

In this ASSESS Insight webinar, Alexander Busch, Rod Dreisbach, and Frank Popielas present a refined version of the talk originally delivered at the NAFEMS World Congress 2025:
What Simulation Engineers Need to Know About MBSE”.
This updated presentation incorporates feedback from the live event and introduces enhanced visualizations and messaging, developed to communicate more clearly with simulation and analysis professionals.

The session explores:

  • The motivations behind MBSE and how it complements simulation efforts
  • Common misconceptions and communication gaps between Systems Engineering and Simulation communities
  • Practical guidance for simulation practitioners to navigate MBSE contexts
  • Opportunities for tool and process integration without forcing unnatural convergence

This webinar also supports a forthcoming article in the NAFEMS Engineering Modelling, Analysis & Simulation (EMAS) Journal, aiming to extend the conversation and reach a broader audience in the engineering modeling and simulation community.

Whether you're a Simulation Engineer curious about MBSE, or a Systems Engineer seeking better collaboration with simulation teams, this session offers a bridge between disciplines—grounded in real-world experience and focused on practical value.

Speaker:

Alexander Busch, Ph.D., CSEP, is a Lead Application Engineer at Ansys (part of Synopsys), specializing in and bridging the worlds of Model-Based Engineering, physics-based simulation, System Simulation, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), and Digital Engineering with over 20 years of hands-on engineering and academic experience—including work on life support and refrigeration systems.

He is an active contributor to the NAFEMS-INCOSE Systems Modeling and Simulation Working Group, where he leads the focus team "Refine the Understanding of Systems Modeling and Simulation".

Alexander was a member of the German translation team for the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook v5 and has authored or co-authored 67 publications on simulation and systems engineering. His academic experience includes teaching System Simulation and Multiphase Transport at NTNU Trondheim, as well as introductory fluid mechanics at HTW Berlin.
