This review is carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Specification set out in a document “Composite Structures by F.E Analysis” prepared by the NAFEMS General Technology Working Group, dated April 6th 1989 updated by the Statement of Interest submitted by ITET, Aug 7th 1989 and a letter from Prof. G.A.O Davies dated Sept 28th 1989.
The aims of the review:
- To review the needs of a composite pre-processing package whether this be self-contained or embedded/coupled with an existing commercial F.E. code. The needs should include assembly of material stiffness properties for specific elements from data supplied by a user in terms of all lamina properties, including stacking sequence. Attention should be paid to material -, laminate- and element- local / global orientations.
- To address the various fibre and matrix failure criteria needed, including through-thickness effects with direct stresses and interlaminar shears. Special elements or routines may be needed for local features where the three dimensional effects are significant.
- To assess the capability of codes claiming to have composite features, with respect to items 1 and 2 above; to address user friendly features in interfacing with main F.E. programs and displaying results, whether with or without a commercial postprocessor.
- To highlight weaknesses in codes either via a checklist or by quantitatively descriptive summaries if these weaknesses are common or generic. The checklist should be publishable, with codes named.
- If important features are identified, to propose a few benchmarks and to try these out on one code. Benchmark presentations should aim to follow single page formats adopted by NAFEMS in the past issues of “Benchmark”.
- To identify whether codes have local UK support in addition to supply of documentation. Features of codes necessary for any F.E. analysis are not to be reviewed: only the special composite features, including special elements such as sandwich plates.
