Simulation Credibility

- Trust in your Simulation in the AI/ML Era

16 - 17 March 2027

Malmö, Sweden

Call for Presentations

Submit your short abstract and share your experience with simulation credibility, verification, validation, uncertainty quantification, and emerging AI/ML-based methods.

Please send by e-mail to roger.oswald@nafems.org

Abstract submission deadline: 4 December 2026

Authors whose abstracts are accepted will be asked to prepare a presentation and a short extended abstract (2-4 pages). Full written papers are not required.

Please forward this e-mail also to your colleagues!

Simulation has become a cornerstone of engineering decision-making. Whether based on finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), system simulation, or other CAE methods, engineers increasingly rely on models to predict the behaviour of complex products and systems.

As simulation capabilities continue to expand, so does the need to establish confidence and credibility in the results. In spite of significant progress in methodology and standardization, current industry practice is still well illustrated by the popular phrase “The only person who believes the simulation numbers is the person who did it. The only person who doesn’t believe the test numbers is the person who did it”. Fundamental questions remain:

  • How do we know when we can trust a simulation result?
  • What are the limits of our models?
  • How do uncertainty and model assumptions influence predictions?
  • How to establish trust and credibility for AI/ML-based models?
  • How can AI/ML tools strengthen trust and credibility in simulation results?

The concepts of Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification (VVUQ) provide a systematic framework for addressing these questions. Validation is equally important for physical and simulation models, and it applies across disciplines including FEA, CFD, and experimental methods.

Attention will be given to understanding the relationship between available data and model credibility. What level of confidence can be achieved when predictions are made within the range of available validation data (interpolation), and what additional challenges arise when predictions are extended outside the validated domain (extrapolation)?

At the same time, Artificial Intelligence and, particularly, Machine Learning are becoming integrated parts of modern engineering workflows. Emerging approaches and commercial solutions are introducing new opportunities for accelerating model development and deployment. However, these methods also raise important questions regarding explainability and trustworthiness.

With this seminar, NAFEMS NORDIC aims to create a forum for discussing both established and emerging approaches for ensuring confidence in engineering models and simulations. We welcome contributions from industry, academia, software developers, researchers, and users across all engineering disciplines.

Preliminary Agenda

Day 1 - Keynotes & technical presentations

13:00 - 18:15 / Get-together 18:15 - 20:00

Call for Presentations – Submit Your Abstract

You are invited to participate by sharing experiences and challenges from your organization on how simulation credibility is addressed, and your thoughts on where trustworthy simulation is heading.

Have you questions or examples that you would like to share about your experience with establishing confidence in simulation results and communicating it to decision-makers? Feel free to submit them beforehand and they will be discussed during the workshops planned within the seminar.

The seminar welcomes participation from every type of organization, large and small, across all industry sectors.

We particularly welcome presentations on:

  • Verification and validation methodologies and strategies
  • Uncertainty quantification
  • Experimental validation of simulations
  • Credibility assessment of simulation models
  • Data coverage and validation domains
  • Interpolation and extrapolation challenges
  • Physics-informed machine learning
  • AI/ML-supported engineering workflows
  • Industrial case studies, lessons learned and future developments
  • Best practices, standards, and governance

NAFEMS prides itself on its independence and neutrality, and we kindly request that submissions avoid overt commercialism.

Day 2 - Workshops

8:30 - 15:00

  • The Key Ideas Behind Verification, Validation and Uncertainty Quantification (VVUQ)
Moderated by Fabio Santandrea (Volvo Group), Ola Widlund (RISE); Martin Eriksson (FS Dynamics Sweden)
  • Focusing mainly on physics-based simulation (parallel workshops):
  • Uncertainty Quantification
Moderated by Fabio Santandrea (Volvo Group)
  • Code and Solution Verification
    Moderated by Ola Widlund (RISE)

We look forward to your abstract submission.

See you in March 2027!
