2D Test Cases In Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (Summary)

A set of finite element tests are proposed for 2D linear elastic fracture mechanics. The work was initiated by the Fracture Mechanics Working Group, and is intended to provide solutions for a range of cracked geometries. The solutions as documented give detailed accounts of how the various finite element techniques are used, and to give both educational and practical insight for experts and newcomers alike.

The work was performed by H L J Pang and R H Leggatt of the Welding Institute, under the auspices of the NAFEMS Fracture Mechanics Working Group

This document contains 13 one-page benchmark problems in 2-D linear elastic fracture mechanics. The benchmarks  were developed at The Welding Institute under the 1st contract awarded by the NAFEMS  Fracture Mechanics Working Group. Subsequent contracts covered 3D linear elastic fracture mechanics, 2D elastic plastic fracture mechanics, a compendium of fracture benchmarks, a  LEFM-FE primer and a compendium of fracture mechanics facilities in Finite Element Systems.

The development of the 2D LEFM benchmarks is described in the final contract report of which this document is an abbreviated version.
