Safety First: Electromagnetic Simulations Including Human Body Models

The increasing integration of electromagnetic (EM) technologies into medical devices, implants, imaging systems, and connected health products poses significant challenges for product safety, regulatory compliance, and certification. Direct experimental assessment of electromagnetic field exposure within the human bodyis often impractical or impossible due to ethical, technical, andphysiological constraints. As a result, numerical simulation of electromagnetic fields combined with detailed anatomical human body models has become a key enabling technology for safety validation across the life science and medical device industries.

This article summarizes state-of-the-art numerical methods and workflows for electromagnetic and multiphysics simulation, aimed at ensuring compliance with safety standards such as Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), implant safety, and thermal limits like the CEM43°C thermal dose, for example. The focus is on high-fidelity computational models, including anatomically heterogeneous human body representations with both frequency- and temperature-dependent material properties, and on their application within realistic product usage scenarios.
