Within the engineering simulation process, many opportunities for error arise that can lead to inaccurate predictions resulting in erroneous engineering assessments and potential failure of the end-use engineered system. Yet engineering simulation organizations must be able to demonstrate that they can deliver accurate simulations that consistently conform to professional standards.
The achievement of professional standards in engineering simulation can be approached through the application of a quality management system conforming to international quality standards ISO 9001 and NAFEMS Engineering Simulation Quality Management Standard (ESQMS), which is NAFEMS’ interpretation of ISO 9001 in the particular context of engineering simulation.
The purpose of this NAFEMS Engineering Simulation Quality Management Guidelines document is to assist simulation organizations in the development and implementation of a quality management system for engineering simulation based on quality standards ISO 9001:2015 and NAFEMS ESQMS:01. It is intended that the text provides sufficient information for readers to gain an understanding of the basic concepts of ISO 9001 quality management in the context of engineering simulation. It should also provide enough information to enable a quality management system for engineering simulation to be planned and developed within the simulation organization.
Part I of this text focusses on understanding the overall engineering simulation process and its sources of error, in order to develop error-controlled simulation procedures. Part II then proceeds to explain how this simulation process can be applied to develop a quality management system for engineering simulation in accordance with the quality requirements of ISO 9001:2015 and NAFEMS ESQMS:01.
