I’ll get straight to the point. I don’t think there’s ever been a wider gulf between where real simulation engineers are in terms of what they do day to day and how they do it, and the messaging from at least some of the simulation software OEMs. It’s a fight we’ve all got a dog at least snarling from the sidelines in… Just possibly, there are good people on all sides. But one aspect that does nobody any good is the perception of what you could call “simulation TRLs” (Technology Readiness Levels) on non-simulation engineers and beyond. Pretty early on in the story that was SSA, a company I co-founded, Richard, my erstwhile business partner, and I realised that what we were selling were arguably...more
6. Simulation Input Data The final major section of the course brings together all the formerly covered information to show how it can be applied to a forming simulation model; as well as material data, other information required to describe the tooling and process are explained as well as certain numerical parameters for the relevant solver. Solvers The different solver methods are presented, including one-step and both explicit and implicit incremental approaches, noting the pros and cons of each. Example Model The final stage is to pull everything together with a simple simulation model of the Forming Limit Test. Results The results of the FLC test model are then presented, starting...more
NAFEMS Americas hosted its biennial regional conference, formerly known as CAASE, on June 21-23, 2022, face-to-face, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana! The NAFEMS Americas Regional Conference 2022 (NRC22 Americas) brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, unlike any other, sharing experiences, discussing relevant trends, discovering common themes, and exploring future issues, including: What is the future for engineering analysis and simulation? Where will it lead us in the next decade? How can designers and engineers realize its full potential? What are the business, technological,...more
This presentation was made at the NAFEMS Americas Seminar "Model-Based Engineering: What is it & How Will It Impact Engineering Simulation" held on the 1st of October 2019 in Columbus Ohio Resource Abstract Simulation is key in driving data-driven decision-making throughout the product design and development process, creating a virtual environment where engineers can optimize and make design trade-offs for cost and function. While simulation practices are well established in the design and development phase, physics-based models are rarely leveraged after a product is released. These physics-based simulation models provide insights into the operational conditions of the product, which cannot...more
NAFEMS Americas and Digital Engineering (DE) teamed up (once again) to present CAASE, the (now Virtual) Conference on Advancing Analysis & Simulation in Engineering, on June 16-18, 2020! CAASE20 brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, unlike any other, to share experiences, discuss relevant trends, discover common themes, and explore future issues, including: -What is the future for engineering analysis and simulation? -Where will it lead us in the next decade? -How can designers and engineers realize its full potential? What are the business, technological, and human enablers that will take past successful developments...more

Structures are built-up from components connected by joints. For a structure with a vibration duty there are many uncertainties: - Can static joint design be used for dynamic design? - What is the dynamic stiffness of a joint? - How much damping is provided by a joint? - How do you model the dynamics of joints in simulation codes? - Can joints be designed to assist structural dynamic? - How repeatable and predictable is the behaviour of a joint? - Can joints be simplified to reduce weight and complexity? Research into these issues has received growing attention and some answers are now available. This workshop introduced the problems, the current knowledge, some approaches and some solutions....more
Simulation Predictions Within the Validation Domain A Discussion with the NAFEMS SGMWG 14-minute read NAFEMS SGMWG - August 17th 2023 As part of an ongoing series, the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group present a discussion on Model Predictive Capability. As well as reading the conversation here, you can watch the video on YouTube. The discussion was hosted by Gregory Westwater (GW, Emerson Automation Solutions) and William Oberkampf (WO, consultant), both members of the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group GW : We are going to get little bit deeper into what the validation domain is. In the past, I've described it as the range of sizes,...more
This presentation, Twin(s) Theme: How can you make sure that the Engineering Simulation Digital Twin being used is accurate enough?, is from 2019. NAFEMS & ASSESS members can view / download when logged in. The ASSESS Initiative is a broad reaching multi-industry initiative with a primary goal to facilitate a revolution of enablement that will vastly increase the availability and utility of Engineering Simulation, leading to significantly increased business benefits across the full spectrum of industries, applications and users.
