Upfront Simulation – What it is, and why you need it

Upfront simulation refers to the practice of performing simulation early in the product development process. Unlike traditional simulation workflows that often occur late in the design cycle, upfront simulation enables design and simulation engineers to leverage simulation tools at the early stages of concept development. This approach supports more informed decision-making, reduces costly redesigns, and accelerates product innovation.

At its core, upfront simulation is about integrating simulation into the initial phases of design. In a gated design release process, it would take place before formal geometry is finalized. It often places simulation tools directly into the hands of engineers who may not be simulation experts, allowing them to evaluate multiple design concepts quickly and effectively. This early engagement with simulation supports critical decisions such as choosing one design concept over another, based on performance metrics rather than intuition alone.
