This presentation was made at the NAFEMS Eastern European Seminar held in Budapest Hundary on November the 27th 2017. This seminar focused on the trends and the new methodologies of numerical simulation and answered the new objectives of the automotive industry. What are the new needs of the automotive industry and by what methods of numerical simulation will engineers be able to face these new elements?...more

  2. Combining Systems Engineering and Simulation - What's So Hard About That!

This presentation was made at the NAFEMS Americas Seminar "Model-Based Engineering: What is it & How Will It Impact Engineering Simulation" held on the 1st of October 2019 in Columbus Ohio Resource Abstract “Combining the modelling and simulation perspectives of both systems engineering and engineering simulation can improve communications and coordination across the product development lifecycle.” The authors firmly believe that this conference tag line is not only true but is achievable today with the right infrastructure, (existing) building blocks, and product development methodologies. If so, then why has this desirable goal been elusive? The authors believe that many pervasive issues...more

  3. What Makes the Integration of an SDM Successful? The Journey and Experiences of an Automotive Supplier

Abstract The successful introduction of a simulation data management system is a complex matter and is subject to a large number of influencing variables and dependencies. Due to the time horizon, some of these variables are in a perpetual state of change and determine the course of the integration. We divided the implementation into four phases. Initially, the needs and potentials of the business units were determined and, based on these, an appropriate SDM tool selection was made in the next step. In phase three, the SDM software was piloted in the working environment and is now being rolled out worldwide. The capability for integration into the existing and future IT landscape, including...more

  4. Diffusion of Innovation

This presentation, Diffusion of Innovation, is from 2018. NAFEMS & ASSESS members can view / download when logged in. The ASSESS Initiative is a broad reaching multi-industry initiative with a primary goal to facilitate a revolution of enablement that will vastly increase the availability and utility of Engineering Simulation, leading to significantly increased business benefits across the full spectrum of industries, applications and users. Since June 2022, ASSESS as been part of NAFEMS....more

  5. Code Verification v Solution Verification

Code Verification v Solution Verification A Discussion with the NAFEMS SGMWG 9-minute read NAFEMS SGMWG - April 7th 2022 In the next part of this series, the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group hosted a discussion looking at code verification v solution verification. As well as reading the conversation here, you can watch the video on YouTube. The discussion features William Oberkampf (WO) & Gregory Westwater (GW), members of the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group Code Verification v Solution Verification: What's the difference? GW : Welcome again Bill. The last time we talked, you made some statements about code verification versus solution...more

  6. User Skills

    6. User Skills We will wrap up the course by discussing which user skills best align with which finite element analysis applications. We will discuss the roles of users ranging from non-specialists to seasoned experts in the successful implementation of finite element analysis. We will also discuss the fundamental skills necessary for basic usage along with what is needed for more advanced applications. Previous chapter Outlook...more

  9. The Use of Evolutionary Algorithms

Product and System Optimization (PSO) The Use of Evolutionary Algorithms The specific technology examined in depth was the use of Evolutionary Algorithms in the context of Product and System Optimization. Companies who offer this technology or who work with it were invited to present their view in the context of a round-table discussion in order to target the following objectives: A general illustration of Evolutionary Algorithms applied to Product and System Optimization. The acquisition of requirements and contribution for the preparation of “best practice” document. Suggestion from the company/organization which can be regarded as some form of validation that could...more

  10. Robust Design Optimization in Virtual Product Development

Robust Design Optimization in Virtual Product Development This NAFEMS publication reviews the state of the art in the application of Robust Design Optimisation (RDO) methods for virtual product development. Further valuable insights on RDO are provided in the NAFEMS publication “ How to Optimise Under Uncertainty ” by Mariapia Marchi. The authors surveys the rapidly evolving discipline of CAE-based Robust Design Optimisation that has been made possible by the phenomenal increase in computer processing power seen over recent decades. The complexity of component design originates from a number of interacting factors. The design engineer has to find a practical resolution to...more
