Overview Modeling and simulation (M&S) are a well-established part of the engineering design process. M&S are also gaining traction in other product life cycle processes through concepts like certification-by-analysis and digital twins. These advancements and the widespread influence of M&S continue to add relevance to the question of how much to trust computational model predictions. The answer to this question can be extremely challenging to determine and strongly depends on the application. Even if there is Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification (VVUQ) evidence to build credibility in the model predictions, this information is often difficult to convey to the model end-users...more
“Digital twin” is currently a term applied in a wide variety of ways. Some differences are variations from sector to sector, but definitions within a sector can also vary significantly. Within engineering, claims are made regarding the benefits of using digital twinning for design, optimisation, process control, virtual testing, and lifetime estimation. In many of its usages, the distinction between a model and a digital twin is not made clear. "When I use a word, it means whatever I want it to mean": Humpty Dumpty in Alice’s Adventures Through The Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll. The danger of this variety and vagueness is that a poor or inconsistent definition and explanation of a digital twin...more
In this webinar the sources of error in numerical simulation and methods used for controlling them will be discussed. It is shown that when the size of the numerical errors in the quantities of interest (QoI) are not known then it is not possible to certify that a design is in compliance with the design rules. Therefore error estimation in terms of the QoI is an essential technical requirement. Error estimation is possible only when the mathematical model is properly formulated. This webinar will also highlight the differences between finite element modeling and numerical simulation. The creative aspects of formulating mathematical models and objective methods for ranking their performance are...more
This presentation was made at NAFEMS UK Conference 2018, Taking Engineering Analysis and Simulation to the Next Level". The NAFEMS UK Conference 2018 brought together all those involved in analysis and simulation from every corner of industry and academia, giving them an opportunity to advance their knowledge, give their organisations a competitive advantage, and a chance to be part of improving the technology itself. Resource Abstract Computer aided engineering methods have been applied to the simulation of manufacturing processes for many years. Techniques such as finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were applied to trouble shoot problems arising in production....more
Virtual Engineering is routinely used as a key tool in the development, optimisation, and verification of products alongside design guidelines and prototypes testing. For a considerable part of the process the only available assessments originate from simulations, engineers must therefore ensure the virtual results are not only delivered but also effectively used. This includes meeting several criteria such as timing, accuracy, robustness, limitations and suggestions appropriate to the project stage. Setting the quality requirements in this loop has been a common responsibility for the simulation specialists and the consumers of simulation results. Now virtual engineering is becoming more accessible...more
This course has now been retired, and it's contents incorporated into the expanded "Introduction to Practical CFD" course. Do you need a more accurate approach to include fluid loads or thermal boundary conditions for structural analyses than idealized and simplified approaches? Do you know the important fluid dynamics phenomena in multidisciplinary problems? What is the role of CFD in strongly coupled fluid-structure interactions? Get the answers to these questions and more with this industry-leading, code-independent e-learning course. CFD for Structural Designers & Analysts This 3-session, live online course will cover a range of topics, all aimed at the structural designer and analyst who...more
Abstract Digital Twins have predominantly been applied to predictive maintenance of high value, low downtime assets. However, realising their full benefit as part of the product development process remains unclear. The main challenge for simulation teams is not creating good models, but the establishment of a new workflow that can make use of connected product data. Indeed, creating a compelling case for a product to be connected in the first place, and provide meaningful data, can be a major hurdle. To overcome these challenges, a proof of concept is initially required to clearly demonstrate benefit to the business, and ultimately the customer. Simulation and product development teams are well...more
Over the last decade the Additive Manufacturing process has attracted a high level of interest due to the potential that the process has to revolutionise the way engineering companies design products. As well as offering rapid cycle times from initial concept to finished product it also allows previously unmanufacturable designs to be produced. However, even with AM, it is not possible to just “print” any shape out of metal. Distortion and cracking are recurring issues. Process simulation has a key role to play in resolving these issues and optimising the process parameters. This document provides guidance for people wanting to predict residual stress and distortion of metal additive manufactured...more
Systems Modeling & Simulation Community Meeting Systems Modeling & Simulation Standards in General, and SysML v2 in particular Tuesday 11 April 2023 | Online 08:00 PST (Los Angeles) | 11:00 EST (New York) 16:00 GMT (London) | 17:00 CET (Berlin) Join Here Since the Systems Modeling & Simulation Standards Focus Team has been dormant over the last couple of years, it's time to revive it and provide an overview of what the Systems Modeling & Simulation Working Group has available from the past, and what roadmap could be envisioned for the future, as standards remain an essential enabler of multidisciplinary systems modeling & simulation. In a second part of the presentation, an overview will...more
