The SSP Standard is a companion standard to the FMI standard, which is now supported by more than 280 simulation tools. SSP provides the system level layer on top of components following the FMI or Modelica standards. In this 2-part webinar series, I will present the basics of what SSP is and does, and how it enables standards-based collaboration for product development and digital twins. We will look at an example of an OEM – supplier collaboration including the exchange of models in standard formats. SSP and the supporting layered standards can be used from early system design to product verification. These data standards are designed to include evidence information for the verification and validation of component models, and the overall system. They can therefore serve as a basis to implement a credible simulation process that decision makers can trust. The next part of this series covers the process aspects.

Attendees will learn the fundamentals of the System Structure and Parameterization (SSP) standard — what it is, why it matters, and how to apply it in system simulation.

Part I covers the core concepts of the standard and demonstrates how SSP supports a collaborative product design process. Part II shifts focus to SSP Traceability, a layered extension of the standard, and shows how it can be used to implement a credible simulation process.

Together, the two sessions illustrate how SSP fits within a simulation governance framework to enable trustworthy, decision-grade system simulations for product design.


Part II: The SSP Traceability Standard

SSP Traceability is a layered standard on top of SSP and FMI that has been developed to enable a Credible Simulation Process based exclusively on open standards. SSP Traceability and the Credible Simulation Process were developed for the autonomous-driving use case, but the effort level can be pared down to remain practical for less critical applications. This webinar walks through an example project designing an electric vehicle powertrain; SSP Traceability will be used to exchange requirements and credibility information in a standardized way. Due to the broad adoption of FMI for system simulation, it can be applied across many different industries. It is particularly useful to implement OEM-supplier collaboration scenarios for the trusted exchange of validated simulation models.

The prostep ivip Smart Systems Engineering (SmartSE) Project continues to develop industrial implementation guidelines for the Credible Simulation Process. In this webinar, I will present the latest version of their recommendations.

H​ubertus Tummerscheit, PhD

Hubertus Tummescheit is the President and Chief Engineer of Model Based Innovation LLC., and a co- founder of Modelon. Model Based Innovation LLC provides software solutions and AI-powered expert services to organizations that use model-based simulation tools to design and develop cyber-physical systems.

He has been involved in the Design of the Modelica language from the beginning and is the developer of a number of open source and commercial Modelica Libraries in the energy and HVAC domains. In 2003 he worked as a research scientist at United Technologies Research Center and returned to Sweden in 2004 to start Modelon AB, the first company fully dedicated to tools and services based on Modelica and FMI. Dr. Tummescheit is also a member of the board of the Modelica Association, and of the FMI steering committee. He is active in the future development of both standards.

Dr. Tummescheit has served as the CEO of Modelon AB from 2004 to 2012 and moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 2013 to establish Modelon as a leading force of innovation in system simulation in the United States of America. Since 2024 he leads an independent consultancy organization that is dedicated to helping customers implement the digital thread for model-based product development and digital twins for product operations.
