Practical Approach to Failure Modes in FEA Design

We want to analyze with our FEA design if the product/structure is "safe". But what does this actually mean? And what is even more important, which things need to be verified, and how to know if we checked all the things that we needed to check?

In this workshop I will use exemplary designs to showcase various failure modes in structures, and give guidance on how to prepare to verify them in analysis.

What will you learn?

  • What "safe design" actually means in the context of an FEA model,
  • Why a code or reference document should define the scope of your verification – and how to use it that way,
  • The Eurocode limit states, and what to pay attention to when checking each of them,
  • Failure modes of bolted connections and welds, and the modelling issues that come with them,
  • Practical examples from real projects: how problems were spotted, and how they were fixed,
  • Workshop discussion: identifying potential failure modes in a set of example structures.

The speaker

Łukasz Skotny founded his own engineering company, Enterfea, in 2007, straight after graduating, and started a PhD programme in parallel, which he completed at the Wrocław University of Technology in 2011. He combines more than ten years of industrial FEA design with more than ten years in academia, and today leads the Enterfea team on high-end, non-linear analyses of steel structures – from silos and tanks to large industrial structures with demanding seismic requirements. His day-to-day work relies on tools such as FEMAP and RFEM, and he is a recognised specialist in stability and non-linear analysis of steel structures designed to Eurocodes. Alongside his design practice, he is a prolific educator: the Enterfea blog and his online and in-person courses have made practical FEA accessible to thousands of engineers worldwide.
