  3. Modelling Structural Failure - What does it Mean to You?

Modelling Structural Failure What does it mean to you? 1-minute read NAFEMS Computational Structural Mechanics Working Group - August 8th 2022 NAFEMS' Computational Structural Mechanics Working Group (CSMWG) are excited to see “Modelling Structural Failure” as one of the topics being covered at the NAFEMS World Congress 2023 , as it’s one of the main areas of interest for the group. But the more we thought about it, the more we realised that there was a lot of different ways of looking at the topic. We decided to poll our own members about what aspects of failure and modelling were of most interest, and came up with a list of questions to capture what we wanted to know. The answers...more

  4. Nonlinear FEA the Smart Way: Designing Beyond the Obvious

Nonlinear FEA the Smart Way: Designing Beyond the Obvious Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Lukasz Skotny CEO / Lead Designer / FEA Course Creator at Enterfea Tutor biography Hey, my name is Łukasz Skotny. I studied civil engineering in the Wrocław University of Technology, where I’ve made a Ph.D. in the field of shell stability. I’ve been an academic teacher for a decade in the field of designing structural steel structures. Parallel to my Ph.D. I started my first design company (structural field). Right now, Enterfea is a leading company in the region providing high-end Nonlinear FEA designs to our Customers. At the same time, I’m running a blog, and I offer online and offline training in Finite...more

  7. What Is Convergence?

What Is Convergence? Convergence is a major issue with the use of CFD software. Fluid mechanics is involved with non-linear processes, dealing with inherently unstable phenomena such as turbulence. CFD software is intended to simulate these physical processes, and therefore is subject to the same issues as the processes it is trying to represent. As such it is not guaranteed that there will be a steady-state ‘converged’ solution to a problem. Computational Fluid Dynamics problems in general are non-linear, and the solution techniques use an iterative process to successively improve a solution, until ‘convergence’ is reached. Convergence can mean many things to many people. One definition [...more

  8. Introduction to Dynamics using FEA

Introduction to Dynamics using FEA This live online course will cover a range of topics, all aimed at structural designers and engineers who are moving into the area of dynamic analysis, including: Normal Modes Analysis, Damping, Modal Coordinates, Modal effective Mass, Transient Response, Frequency Response. What will you learn? The importance of normal modes analysis, Techniques for identifying and characterising normal modes, Roadmaps for simple and effective calculation of transient and frequency response input parameters, A QA checklist covering normal modes and dynamic response analysis, Practical hints and tips on all aspects of normal modes and dynamic response analysis. What questions...more

  9. What Convergence Criteria Should be Used?

What Convergence Criteria Should be Used? This is not an easy answer to give, as it depends upon the User’s requirements, and upon the software package being used. For example, for a simple demonstration calculation, a not-well converged solution might be adequate to illustrate some principles, and for use as a starting guess for a more refined calculation. In other situations where the quantity of interest is in a small localised area of the flow, and the flow rates there are much smaller than inlet flow rates, eg heat transfer inside a small separated region, then a very high level of convergence might be required. A detailed discussion on the definition of suitable Convergence Criteria...more

  10. What is ICME?
