  1. Boeing Abstract

Robust AI in the Wild Dragos D. Margineantu, Ph.D. (Boeing) Abstract: The ultimate goal of research in artificial intelligence is to provide the tools, techniques and methods for building usable systems that make decisions or assist in making complex decisions, that model and “understand” the world, gather relevant knowledge, and act responsibly. In many cases, the practical tasks that are addressed require decisions and actions associated with high risks and low density data, and a certain assurance or robustness is required from the system that employs AI components. Central questions to AI systems research include: What are the principles that we learned from designing and developing...more

  2. Increasing Diversity in the STEM Workforce Might Be Easier Than You Think

NAFEMS Americas and Digital Engineering (DE) teamed up (once again) to present CAASE, the (now Virtual) Conference on Advancing Analysis & Simulation in Engineering, on June 16-18, 2020! CAASE20 brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, unlike any other, to share experiences, discuss relevant trends, discover common themes, and explore future issues, including: -What is the future for engineering analysis and simulation? -Where will it lead us in the next decade? -How can designers and engineers realize its full potential? What are the business, technological, and human enablers that will take past successful developments...more

  3. The Room Where it Happens

The Room Where it Happens Nobody with an ounce of self-respect should encounter the use of ‘networking’ and ‘event’ in the same sentence without the temperature of their bloodstream dropping a few Kelvin. Too much explaining what you do, for a start. I actually thought I’d got explaining what I do for a living pretty much sorted, until a couple of days ago a good friend of many years standing announced on the way out of the pub that she still wasn’t really sure what it was that I did for a living. So, it’s against that background that I’m going to propose that it’s not what you know, it’s who you know that matters. But not in a jobs for the boys 21st century nepo baby kind of way. This article...more

  4. Talking Shop with Tony Abbey - Episode 15 - Random response dynamic analysis - so what is a PSD curve?

Talking Shop with Tony Abbey Episode 15 - Random response dynamic analysis - so what is a PSD curve? Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have had to cancel this episode, and will let everyone know the rescheduled date when available. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience. NAFEMS is talking shop with Tony Abbey on a range of topics relevant to, and suggested by, the engineering analysis community. This free series is open to everyone , and we hope you can join us online. We kicked off each session with a brief presentation on the subject from Tony, and thereafter, open up the floor for written questions and thoughts from you, the audience. The sessions was moderated, allowing...more

  5. Simulation Data Management – What About my Spreadsheets?

Simulation Data Management – What About my Spreadsheets? An approach for capturing data from simulation and modeling spreadsheets Today, many manufacturers are facing tremendous challenges related to the storage and retrieval of simulation data. Product Data Management (PDM) systems are not capable of handling the terabytes of information which are generated as a result of performing these complex simulations. Simulation Data Management (SDM) provides a mechanism for the storage, management, and retrieval of this performance-related data. The Simulation Data Management working group addresses this breakthrough technology by helping the community better understand the benefits gained from implementing...more

  8. What are the Chances of the Ship Snapping?

What are the Chances of the Ship Snapping? Considerations When Using Probabilistic Analysis The NAFEMS Stochastics Technical Working Group In the April 2019 issue of NAFEMS BENCHMARK magazine , two challenge problems are presented. The first one consists of two normal distributions, producing an analytical (theoretical) solution. The second one contains several distributions (normal, uniform and lognormal), and therefore an exact solution is not available. At the NAFEMS World Congress 2019 these problems were discussed and a few solutions were presented. In this presentation these solutions and additional ones are discussed in combination with the theoretical background and the pitfalls...more

  9. Enabling Democratization By Engineers, For Engineers

This presentation was made at CAASE18, The Conference on Advancing Analysis & Simulation in Engineering. CAASE18 brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, to share experiences, discuss relevant trends, discover common themes, and explore future issues. Resource Abstract There is increasing recognition of the value of democratizing the use of engineering software into the hands of more users. The vision for achieving this next step in the use of CAE tools has many aspects and projected benefits. Companies want to enable more engineers to be able to perform sophisticated simulations. This requires easy to use apps that...more
