NAFEMS Americas and Digital Engineering (DE) teamed up (once again) to present CAASE, the (now Virtual) Conference on Advancing Analysis & Simulation in Engineering, on June 16-18, 2020! CAASE20 brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, unlike any other, to share experiences, discuss relevant trends, discover common themes, and explore future issues, including: -What is the future for engineering analysis and simulation? -Where will it lead us in the next decade? -How can designers and engineers realize its full potential? What are the business, technological, and human enablers that will take past successful developments...more
The Room Where it Happens Nobody with an ounce of self-respect should encounter the use of ‘networking’ and ‘event’ in the same sentence without the temperature of their bloodstream dropping a few Kelvin. Too much explaining what you do, for a start. I actually thought I’d got explaining what I do for a living pretty much sorted, until a couple of days ago a good friend of many years standing announced on the way out of the pub that she still wasn’t really sure what it was that I did for a living. So, it’s against that background that I’m going to propose that it’s not what you know, it’s who you know that matters. But not in a jobs for the boys 21st century nepo baby kind of way. This article...more
Talking Shop with Tony Abbey Episode 15 - Random response dynamic analysis - so what is a PSD curve? Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have had to cancel this episode, and will let everyone know the rescheduled date when available. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience. NAFEMS is talking shop with Tony Abbey on a range of topics relevant to, and suggested by, the engineering analysis community. This free series is open to everyone , and we hope you can join us online. We kicked off each session with a brief presentation on the subject from Tony, and thereafter, open up the floor for written questions and thoughts from you, the audience. The sessions was moderated, allowing...more
Simulation Data Management – What About my Spreadsheets? An approach for capturing data from simulation and modeling spreadsheets Today, many manufacturers are facing tremendous challenges related to the storage and retrieval of simulation data. Product Data Management (PDM) systems are not capable of handling the terabytes of information which are generated as a result of performing these complex simulations. Simulation Data Management (SDM) provides a mechanism for the storage, management, and retrieval of this performance-related data. The Simulation Data Management working group addresses this breakthrough technology by helping the community better understand the benefits gained from implementing...more

Just ask. Popular Questions What industry has had the most success deploying SDM? What is the difference between an engineering simulation model and a digital twin? What is an ill-conditioned matrix? How is CFD used in F1 motor-racing? More Example Questions Compare and contrast the arc-length and newton-raphson methods How can you calculate the fatigue life of a weld using FEA? In what industries is multibody simulation most commonly used? What is aiolas? aiolas is an ai-powered direct question search. It has indexed the entire NAFEMS resource centre, so you could say it knows everything that has ever been produced by NAFEMS, or at any NAFEMS event. You can ask...more
This presentation was made at NAFEMS Americas Seminar "Engineering Analysis & Simulation in the Automotive Industry: Creating the Next Generation Vehicle Accurate Modelling for Tomorrow's Technologies". The automotive engineering community is now confronting the largest technology transformation since its inception. This includes the electrification of powertrains for more efficient consumption and cleaner emissions, the reinvention of the battery with fast wireless charging capabilities and finally the advent of a fully autonomous vehicle. Compounding to these technology changes, the automotive companies design verification process is moving away from a major reliance on physical testing to...more

Structures are built-up from components connected by joints. For a structure with a vibration duty there are many uncertainties: - Can static joint design be used for dynamic design? - What is the dynamic stiffness of a joint? - How much damping is provided by a joint? - How do you model the dynamics of joints in simulation codes? - Can joints be designed to assist structural dynamic? - How repeatable and predictable is the behaviour of a joint? - Can joints be simplified to reduce weight and complexity? Research into these issues has received growing attention and some answers are now available. This workshop introduced the problems, the current knowledge, some approaches and some solutions....more
