Model Calibration and Model Validation - What's the Difference? A Discussion with the NAFEMS SGMWG 12-minute read NAFEMS SGMWG - March 22nd 2023 As part of an ongoing series, the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group present a discussion about the difference between model calibration and model validation. As well as reading the conversation here, you can watch the video on YouTube. The discussion was hosted by Gregory Westwater (GW, Emerson Automation Solutions) and William Oberkampf (WO, consultant), both members of the NAFEMS S imulation Governance & Management Working Group GW: Model calibration and model validation, how do you define each? And what's the distinction...more
Academics Symposium: Discussion Session Current & Perceived Future Challenges in Engineering Simulation Education Jim Wood, JW Analysis We are keen to receive input from both industrialists and academics in this discussion session. Even if you can’t manage along, we would be happy to accept your input before or after the event. The call presentations contains a wealth or relevant topics. Meanwhile here are a few stimulating thoughts and questions … Do industrialists see any perceived shortcomings in new graduates in this area? Do industrialists feel that they have sufficient opportunity to influence University Programme/Course Committees? Has the design pendulum swung too far in general...more
2. Hardware Requirements General Considerations In this chapter, we’ll discuss what hardware will provide you with the best finite element software performance. We will start off by providing you with an overview of the components and systems that we will be covering in more depth throughout the chapter. We will also start off with some basic guidelines to help you optimize your workstation configurations. (Please consider that this course has been created in 2020, some hardware specific considerations may not be relevant anymore.) Processing This section will provide some guidance as to which CPUs are most ideal for FEA as well as what options to consider. We will also go into some...more
What Our Members are Saying Discover how being part of the NAFEMS Community empowers professionals accross a wide array of industries. Find out from our members how the different resources such as training courses, webinars, Technical Working Groups, the PSE certification help them in advancing their skillset and drive innovation. Our graduate training program in FEA modeling and simulation fundamentals has received strong demand from working professionals seeking to strengthen skills for career advancement or a pivot to a new industry. I’ve talked with many program participants and their employers and have consistently heard that they value our NAFEMS membership and the credibility conferred...more
You may be wondering, ‘Why should I be bothered about a Modelling and Simulation Strategy? I’m too busy actually doing the job! Our organisation just wants the results!’ The answer is that simulation is highly likely to be critical to your organisation’s success. It’s also highly complex and impacts the whole organisation. It consumes significant budget, resources and time throughout your product creation and delivery processes. Most importantly it impacts the performance of the products you deliver to your customers....more
Abstract The laboratory of the Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd. located at the ZalaZONE proving gound has the goal to test and develop Automated Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems applications applying a Driver-in-the-Loop Simulator. In both topics we perform simulations and support the preparations of physical tests, further on we have our research and development topics. In our recent study we focus on to identify bottlenecks of the trending collision avoidance technology, which is one of the fastest growing ADAS feature field. Nowadays we have many different ADAS solutions which are working well on their own. Our main task now is to develop an intelligent autonomous driving algorythm...more
NRC22 Americas "Why I Attended" The following statements were made by individuals who attended NRC Americas/CAASE in recent years. The only modifications made were to remove any identifying information (e.g., company or product names). This information was captured in the conference feedback form, and was not a required field, so the response to attendee ratio is not 1:1. Why Did I Attend? Organization Type 'Presentation of our work and networking.' Academia / Research 'Networking and Making Global Presence for Company' Academia / Research 'To become more involved in the CAE community.' End-User 'The main objective was to find better ways to implement CAE.' End-User ...more
This presentation was made at the NAFEMS UK Seminar "Welding Simlation - How Much Validation is Enough?" Resource Abstract Weld modelling – the prediction of weld residual stresses using finite element techniques – has been developed and applied in the UK civil nuclear industry over the last two decades. Its development and use were driven by the extensive residual-stress-driven creep cracking problems encountered in the UK Advanced Gas Cooled reactor fleet. This effort resulted in the R6 Weld Modelling Guidelines, originally issued in 2009, which presented a state of the art, formalised approach to using finite element techniques to predict residual stresses in austenitic steel welds, with...more
first beta version of the VMAP Standard has now been released, and is available at vmap.eu.com . VMAP is an open and free standard for the transfer of information between simulations within a process chain, no matter what software is used to carry these out. This provides engineers with a fast solution to pass information from one calculation to another without needing to create one-off interfaces. VMAP provides a detailed and well-defined open-source standard, accompanied by a software library of input/output tools to read/write the VMAP data files and enable fast development of transfer operations between different software packages. Many software companies and suppliers have included, or are...more
