  2. Model Calibration and Model Validation - What's the Difference?

Model Calibration and Model Validation - What's the Difference? A Discussion with the NAFEMS SGMWG 12-minute read NAFEMS SGMWG - March 22nd 2023 As part of an ongoing series, the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group present a discussion about the difference between model calibration and model validation. As well as reading the conversation here, you can watch the video on YouTube. The discussion was hosted by Gregory Westwater (GW, Emerson Automation Solutions) and William Oberkampf (WO, consultant), both members of the NAFEMS S imulation Governance & Management Working Group GW: Model calibration and model validation, how do you define each? And what's the distinction...more

  3. What are the Chances of the Ship Snapping? - Considerations When Using Probabilistic Analysis

In the April 2019 issue of NAFEMS BENCHMARK magazine, two challenge problems are presented. The first one consists of two normal distributions, producing an analytical (theoretical) solution. The second one contains several distributions (normal, uniform and lognormal), and therefore an exact solution is not available. At the NAFEMS World Congress 2019 these problems were discussed and a few solutions were presented. In this presentation these solutions and additional ones are discussed in combination with the theoretical background and the pitfalls of these methods....more

  4. ITEA VMAP - A new Interface Standard for Integrated Virtual Material Modelling in Manufacturing Industry

first beta version of the VMAP Standard has now been released, and is available at vmap.eu.com . VMAP is an open and free standard for the transfer of information between simulations within a process chain, no matter what software is used to carry these out. This provides engineers with a fast solution to pass information from one calculation to another without needing to create one-off interfaces. VMAP provides a detailed and well-defined open-source standard, accompanied by a software library of input/output tools to read/write the VMAP data files and enable fast development of transfer operations between different software packages. Many software companies and suppliers have included, or are...more

  8. From SysML to Mars: Mars2020’s MBSE Infusion

From SysML to Mars: Mars2020’s MBSE Infusion Mars2020, NASA’s next Mars Rover inherited a majority of Mars Science Laboratory (MSL)’s Flight hardware and software. It also inherited the technical baseline described in disparate presentations, spreadsheets, document repositories, emails, and intelligent minds that have long left the project. The Mars2020 Systems Engineering leadership wanted to define their technical baseline in an integrative, data driven manner, that would incorporate the inherited design with the new science instruments and Martian sample caching system. The team chose to leverage advancements in MBSE to garner a better understanding of the complexities facing the mission....more

  9. Dr. Dennis Nagy

Abstract Discussion: What are the Opportunities & Obstacles for More Engineering Simulation in Oil & Gas? Engineering simulation is being used more extensively now in oil and gas, but the industry still lags behind the traditional simulation industry leaders of aerospace and automotive. In this discussion, the panelists (consisting of the event presenters and event sponsors) will offer their expert opinions and insights into where simulation has had the greatest impact so far and what are the key obstacles (technical, cultural) to more widespread effective use of simulation in oil and gas. About the Speaker Dr. Dennis Nagy, NAFEMS Americas Steering Committee & Principal at Beyond CAE Dr....more
