The "Usual Suspects" by Tony Abbey, FE Training I have been living in the US now for 13 years and occasionally I get a little nostalgic for the TV shows I grew up with in the UK. I found a DVD catalogue which included what in the US we call Cop Shows. The English vernacular I remember is Police Dramas. I ordered some old favourites such as “The Sweeney”, “The Professionals” and even an extraordinarily dated “Dixon of Dock Green”. As I sat through a few it struck me that there was often a common stage in the plot line. If a bank had been robbed, security van hijacked or similar knavery, the first thing our heroes did was to arrest the ‘usual suspects’. The thinking is pretty logical; if somebody’s...more

Meet the NAFEMS Eastern Europe Student Award Winner: Adam Hybler - University of West Bohemia 5-minute read Márton Grόza- December 5th 2025 Adam Hybler is the winner of the 2024–2025 NAFEMS Eastern Europe Student Award. He talked to us about his education, his simulation work, and the inspiration behind the project. He discusses his research, his travels, and his recommendations for future students here. Tell us a bit about yourself. I’m a CAE engineer from the Czech Republic with a strong background in computer simulation. I studied Applied Mechanics at the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia, where I was given the opportunity in my second year to collaborate...more
Future - Not Fantasy Christoph Gümbel is widely regarded as one of the leading minds in digital prototyping and applied simulation methods for design and functional verification in the vehicle development process. He spent over 30 years with Porsche starting off as a software engineer, progressing to the role of head of CAE before becoming director of the virtual vehicle. He's now a consultant for the virtual development process and partner at Future Matters, one of Europe’s leading future research institutes. He spoke to NAFEMS’ David Quinn about why being a futurist is vital in today’s automotive industry....more

If you look at the back of the quarter from New Hampshire, you will see a picture of the Old Man of the Mountain. Prior to its collapse in 1997, this naturally occurring rock formation had once depicted the profile of a man’s face when viewed from a certain perspective on the ground. Signs directing you to a specific viewing area were placed along the local highways. While standing at one of the designated viewing areas you could see the profile (pictured on the right). If you were standing anywhere other than one of the designated viewing areas, the profile was lost to you and looked like any other mountain; The proper meaning requires the right perspective....more

NAFEMS Americas and Digital Engineering (DE) teamed up (once again) to present CAASE, the (now Virtual) Conference on Advancing Analysis & Simulation in Engineering, on June 16-18, 2020! CAASE20 brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, unlike any other, to share experiences, discuss relevant trends, discover common themes, and explore future issues, including: -What is the future for engineering analysis and simulation? -Where will it lead us in the next decade? -How can designers and engineers realize its full potential? What are the business, technological, and human enablers that will take past successful developments...more
There are still some problems that FE methods do not solve efficiently or accurately. In particular, FE methods are not ideally suited for solution of dynamic problems involving a large amount of deformation because an accurate solution requires regularly-shaped elements and the movement of the nodes can lead to mesh distortion and badly-shaped elements. One approach to avoiding the problems associated with mesh deformation is remeshing, where anew mesh of regularly shaped elements is created during the solution process. This approach is computationally expensive and has potential loss of accuracy as it requires the mapping of the solution from one mesh to the next which is why meshless or particle...more
