Blog: How Do I Switch It On? Excuse me, how do I switch it on? 19 March 2013 by Tony Abbey, NAFEMS Training Manager One of the most enjoyable aspects of the training that I carry out is the travelling involved. I have been very fortunate to teach in many countries around the world and to visit many interesting places. Often this involves flying into an airport, picking up a rental car and then heading off to my hotel on the first night. One of the great blessings has been the introduction of SatNav or GPS navigation aids. I always carry my own with me and like to have a backup iPhone or similar just in case. Finding a city centre, or very rural, hotel on a dark rainy night is now a lot...more

What, exactly, is Scientific Machine Learning, and how can it enhance traditional simulation? What role does it play in building surrogate models like Neural Operators or Physics-Informed Neural Networks? This webinar explores the transformative potential of Scientific Machine Learning, a powerful approach that fuses the rigour of physics-based modelling with the adaptive power of data-driven algorithms. Discover how this synergy is bridging the gap between complex simulations and real-time decision-making, unlocking new potential in product development. The webinar will focus on enabling you to augment , not replace, your established simulation workflows. create highly accurate surrogate...more
This Presentation, ASSESS Congress 2019 - Opening Remarks, is from 2019. NAFEMS & ASSESS members can view / download when logged in. The ASSESS Initiative is a broad reaching multi-industry initiative with a primary goal to facilitate a revolution of enablement that will vastly increase the availability and utility of Engineering Simulation, leading to significantly increased business benefits across the full spectrum of industries, applications and users. Since June 2022, ASSESS as been part of NAFEMS....more
Metal forming simulations are increasingly adopted by manufacturers to improve the quality and performance of products and processes while shortening development cycles so that these products can be brought to market earlier. Successful simulation of metal forming processes requires a range of input data about the geometry of the workpiece and tooling, the process forces and tooling motion and, above all, the characteristics of the workpiece material. The accuracy of the results depend on having a good understanding of this input data. In this webinar we introduce manufacturing process simulation methods for a range of metal forming operations and then review the material characterisation requirements...more
Exploding Dough And Fun With Carrots by Tony Abbey, FE Training Welcome to my first blog for NAFEMS and an unusual title. It has been a very busy two weeks travelling and teaching the NAFEMS “Introduction to FEA” class in the UK and Holland. As usual each class was very different - depending on the background of the client company and the individuals attending. Both classes were fun, I always enjoy meeting fellow engineers and talking about FEA and engineering. Two or three days working with a group gives a great opportunity to find out about everyone’s background, what aspects of analysis they are involved with and the engineering behind the products or process. It is a privilege to have...more
Presentation made by O. Widlund, M. Stallgard, J. Ask at the NAFEMS Nordic Conference 'Engineering Simulation: Best Practices, New Developments, Future Trends' that was held in Gothenburg, Sweden on 10-11 May 2016....more
This presentation was made at NAFEMS UK Conference 2018, Taking Engineering Analysis and Simulation to the Next Level". The NAFEMS UK Conference 2018 brought together all those involved in analysis and simulation from every corner of industry and academia, giving them an opportunity to advance their knowledge, give their organisations a competitive advantage, and a chance to be part of improving the technology itself. Resource Abstract Computer aided engineering methods have been applied to the simulation of manufacturing processes for many years. Techniques such as finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were applied to trouble shoot problems arising in production....more
Virtual Engineering is routinely used as a key tool in the development, optimisation, and verification of products alongside design guidelines and prototypes testing. For a considerable part of the process the only available assessments originate from simulations, engineers must therefore ensure the virtual results are not only delivered but also effectively used. This includes meeting several criteria such as timing, accuracy, robustness, limitations and suggestions appropriate to the project stage. Setting the quality requirements in this loop has been a common responsibility for the simulation specialists and the consumers of simulation results. Now virtual engineering is becoming more accessible...more
This course has now been retired, and it's contents incorporated into the expanded "Introduction to Practical CFD" course. Do you need a more accurate approach to include fluid loads or thermal boundary conditions for structural analyses than idealized and simplified approaches? Do you know the important fluid dynamics phenomena in multidisciplinary problems? What is the role of CFD in strongly coupled fluid-structure interactions? Get the answers to these questions and more with this industry-leading, code-independent e-learning course. CFD for Structural Designers & Analysts This 3-session, live online course will cover a range of topics, all aimed at the structural designer and analyst who...more
