  1. How to – Model the Additive Manufacturing Process

Over the last decade the Additive Manufacturing process has attracted a high level of interest due to the potential that the process has to revolutionise the way engineering companies design products. As well as offering rapid cycle times from initial concept to finished product it also allows previously unmanufacturable designs to be produced. However, even with AM, it is not possible to just “print” any shape out of metal. Distortion and cracking are recurring issues. Process simulation has a key role to play in resolving these issues and optimising the process parameters. This document provides guidance for people wanting to predict residual stress and distortion of metal additive manufactured...more

  2. Systems Modeling & Simulation Standards in General, and SysML v2 in particular

Systems Modeling & Simulation Community Meeting Systems Modeling & Simulation Standards in General, and SysML v2 in particular Tuesday 11 April 2023 | Online 08:00 PST (Los Angeles) | 11:00 EST (New York) 16:00 GMT (London) | 17:00 CET (Berlin) Join Here Since the Systems Modeling & Simulation Standards Focus Team has been dormant over the last couple of years, it's time to revive it and provide an overview of what the Systems Modeling & Simulation Working Group has available from the past, and what roadmap could be envisioned for the future, as standards remain an essential enabler of multidisciplinary systems modeling & simulation. In a second part of the presentation, an overview will...more

  4. Accurately Predicting Fiber Behavior through DEM and DEM-CFD Coupling Simulations

NAFEMS Americas and Digital Engineering (DE) teamed up (once again) to present CAASE, the (now Virtual) Conference on Advancing Analysis & Simulation in Engineering, on June 16-18, 2020! CAASE20 brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, unlike any other, to share experiences, discuss relevant trends, discover common themes, and explore future issues, including: -What is the future for engineering analysis and simulation? -Where will it lead us in the next decade? -How can designers and engineers realize its full potential? What are the business, technological, and human enablers that will take past successful developments...more

  5. Evaluating Moving Particle Simulation Method Against Mesh Based Methods

This presentation was made at the 2019 NAFEMS World Congress in Quebec Canada Resource Abstract This paper uses the results of a publicly available paper which validates mesh based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for predicting oil flow in a closed gearbox to compare the same results for a particle based numerical method. In the original paper a standard FZG no-load power loss test rig containing a wheel and pinion partially submerged in oil was used. Multiple types of oil were each tested at several rotational rates to gather qualitative images of oil distribution and churning power losses. These results were then compared to numerical simulations performed in Ansys Fluent 18.0....more

  6. Verification, Validation, and Predictive Capability: What's What?

The webinar recording can be viewed by clicking this link. The password can be obtained via the member download button. Engineering organizations must increasingly rely on computational simulation for design and predicted performance, reliability, and safety of systems. Computational analysts, designers, decision makers, and project managers who rely on simulation should have practical techniques and methods for assessing simulation credibility. This webinar presents an introduction to the topics of verification, validation, and predictive capability. These topics are applicable to essentially all engineering and science applications, including fluid dynamics, heat transfer, solid mechanics,...more

  10. What Simulation Engineers Need to Know About MBSE – Bridging Two Worlds

The growing adoption of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) presents both opportunities and challenges for the simulation community. As organizations strive for more integrated digital engineering workflows, Simulation Engineers are increasingly expected to align with MBSE practices—yet the terminology, methods, and objectives can differ significantly between the two domains. In this ASSESS Insight webinar , Alexander Busch, Rod Dreisbach, and Frank Popielas present a refined version of the talk originally delivered at the NAFEMS World Congress 2025: “ What Simulation Engineers Need to Know About MBSE ”. This updated presentation incorporates feedback from the live event and introduces enhanced...more
