  1. Leveraging Systems Thinking, MBSE and Simulation in the Design and Analysis of Highly Distributed Autonomous Vehicle Systems

This presentation was made at the NAFEMS Americas Seminar "Model-Based Engineering: What is it & How Will It Impact Engineering Simulation" held on the 1st of October 2019 in Columbus Ohio Resource Abstract The increase in global urbanization presents significant traffic congestion and emission challenges. Ford sees these challenges as an opportunity to design smart Autonomous Vehicle Solutions that can actually help city planners design transportation systems that improve the quality of life for everyone. To accomplish this goal we are leveraging Systems Thinking, Model Based Systems Engineering and Virtual Simulation Analysis & Design to define the next generation of mobility solutions. ...more

  2. Automotive Panel Discussion 2

This discussion session took place at the 2021 NAFEMS World Congress Discussion topics Battery Simulation: - What is the latest in battery technology development (w.r.t, range extension, fast charging, wireless charging)? Is numerical simulation helping? - One critical aspect of battery is Thermal Runaway. Today there have been several presentation on this! Are the current CAE methods adequate? Or are they still major gaps in simulation. - What about the simulation of battery aging effect on its efficiency? Autonomous Driving 1: With respect to ADAS and Autonomous development, is numerical simulation recognized by the industry as a critical path to delivering these technologies? Or is the industry...more

  4. Modelling Structural Failure - What does it Mean to You?

Modelling Structural Failure What does it mean to you? 1-minute read NAFEMS Computational Structural Mechanics Working Group - August 8th 2022 NAFEMS' Computational Structural Mechanics Working Group (CSMWG) are excited to see “Modelling Structural Failure” as one of the topics being covered at the NAFEMS World Congress 2023 , as it’s one of the main areas of interest for the group. But the more we thought about it, the more we realised that there was a lot of different ways of looking at the topic. We decided to poll our own members about what aspects of failure and modelling were of most interest, and came up with a list of questions to capture what we wanted to know. The answers...more

  6. Nonlinear FEA the Smart Way: Designing Beyond the Obvious

Nonlinear FEA the Smart Way: Designing Beyond the Obvious Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Lukasz Skotny CEO / Lead Designer / FEA Course Creator at Enterfea Tutor biography Hey, my name is Łukasz Skotny. I studied civil engineering in the Wrocław University of Technology, where I’ve made a Ph.D. in the field of shell stability. I’ve been an academic teacher for a decade in the field of designing structural steel structures. Parallel to my Ph.D. I started my first design company (structural field). Right now, Enterfea is a leading company in the region providing high-end Nonlinear FEA designs to our Customers. At the same time, I’m running a blog, and I offer online and offline training in Finite...more

  7. What Is Convergence?

What Is Convergence? Convergence is a major issue with the use of CFD software. Fluid mechanics is involved with non-linear processes, dealing with inherently unstable phenomena such as turbulence. CFD software is intended to simulate these physical processes, and therefore is subject to the same issues as the processes it is trying to represent. As such it is not guaranteed that there will be a steady-state ‘converged’ solution to a problem. Computational Fluid Dynamics problems in general are non-linear, and the solution techniques use an iterative process to successively improve a solution, until ‘convergence’ is reached. Convergence can mean many things to many people. One definition [...more

  8. The Analysis Agenda

What Next for Engineering Simulation? Let us know! Take the 4-minute survey here. What we understand today about the world is different from what we thought yesterday. We need to prepare for what it will be tomorrow. As one of the fastest moving and technologically advanced areas of industry, engineering analysis and simulation continues to evolve. Based on input from the NAFEMS membership community, we identified key areas of interest which we will explore leading up to and during the 2021 NAFEMS World Congress, as well as other future activities. Through this effort, we will provide the community with information and resources so it can expand on the foundation of knowledge developed...more

  9. What Convergence Criteria Should be Used?

What Convergence Criteria Should be Used? This is not an easy answer to give, as it depends upon the User’s requirements, and upon the software package being used. For example, for a simple demonstration calculation, a not-well converged solution might be adequate to illustrate some principles, and for use as a starting guess for a more refined calculation. In other situations where the quantity of interest is in a small localised area of the flow, and the flow rates there are much smaller than inlet flow rates, eg heat transfer inside a small separated region, then a very high level of convergence might be required. A detailed discussion on the definition of suitable Convergence Criteria...more
