Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

The focus of this ASSESS Initiative theme is to explore issues arising as a result of the emergence of data driven modelling approaches.

Physics-based modelling and simulation has become a key tool in the engineering industry. The business benefits realised by having a mature physics-based simulation capability are well understood1

New data driven modelling approaches are becoming available to the practicing engineer. These new methods excel in their ability to learn and to recognise patterns. They are especially adept at analysing large and complex datasets. There is high interest in data driven methods as they can be quick to run, can effectively integrate data from a range of different sources and can be easily democratised.

The ASSESS Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Theme Committee will explore how data driven modelling can complement and extend traditional, physics-based simulation. The committee will discuss:

  • How to build confidence in data driven models.
  • Map out the organisational steps needed for adoption.
  • Pinpoint high-value application areas.
