  1. Talking Shop with Tony Abbey - Episode 10 - What are spider elements in FEA - why rigid and flexible types?

Talking Shop with Tony Abbey Episode 10 - What are 'spider' elements in FEA - why rigid and flexible types? NAFEMS is talking shop with Tony Abbey on a range of topics relevant to, and suggested by, the engineering analysis community. This free series is open to everyone , and we hope you can join us online. We kicked off each session with a brief presentation on the subject from Tony, and thereafter, open up the floor for written questions and thoughts from you, the audience. The sessions was moderated, allowing the host to put your questions and comments direct to Tony, and we also made each episode live on our youtube and vimeo channels, as well as sharing on social media. This week...more

  2. Engineering Analysis & Simulation in the Automotive Industry: Electrification & Advanced Lightweighting Techniques

Engineering Analysis & Simulation in the Automotive Industry: Electrification & Advanced Lightweighting Techniques Date: Thursday, April 27th, 2017 Location: Troy, MI Conference Presentations and Recordings Now Available! Access Presentations Access Presentations Recordings Overview As government demands aggressive Fuel Economy and CO2 carbon emissions requirements, it has become imperative for engineers to look for new and inventive solutions to meet the imposed demands to deliver fuel efficient clean vehicles. These are being achieved by intense efforts of electrification of powertrains, as well as aggressive weight reduction efforts imposed during the vehicle development. Automotive...more

  3. Trends and Challenges In CFD for the 21st century

This presentation was made at the NAFEMS Eastern European Seminar held in Budapest Hundary on November the 27th 2017. This seminar focused on the trends and the new methodologies of numerical simulation and answered the new objectives of the automotive industry. What are the new needs of the automotive industry and by what methods of numerical simulation will engineers be able to face these new elements?...more

  4. What Makes the Integration of an SDM Successful? The Journey and Experiences of an Automotive Supplier

Abstract The successful introduction of a simulation data management system is a complex matter and is subject to a large number of influencing variables and dependencies. Due to the time horizon, some of these variables are in a perpetual state of change and determine the course of the integration. We divided the implementation into four phases. Initially, the needs and potentials of the business units were determined and, based on these, an appropriate SDM tool selection was made in the next step. In phase three, the SDM software was piloted in the working environment and is now being rolled out worldwide. The capability for integration into the existing and future IT landscape, including...more

  5. Combining Systems Engineering and Simulation - What's So Hard About That!

This presentation was made at the NAFEMS Americas Seminar "Model-Based Engineering: What is it & How Will It Impact Engineering Simulation" held on the 1st of October 2019 in Columbus Ohio Resource Abstract “Combining the modelling and simulation perspectives of both systems engineering and engineering simulation can improve communications and coordination across the product development lifecycle.” The authors firmly believe that this conference tag line is not only true but is achievable today with the right infrastructure, (existing) building blocks, and product development methodologies. If so, then why has this desirable goal been elusive? The authors believe that many pervasive issues...more

  6. Diffusion of Innovation

This presentation, Diffusion of Innovation, is from 2018. NAFEMS & ASSESS members can view / download when logged in. The ASSESS Initiative is a broad reaching multi-industry initiative with a primary goal to facilitate a revolution of enablement that will vastly increase the availability and utility of Engineering Simulation, leading to significantly increased business benefits across the full spectrum of industries, applications and users. Since June 2022, ASSESS as been part of NAFEMS....more

  7. Code Verification v Solution Verification

Code Verification v Solution Verification A Discussion with the NAFEMS SGMWG 9-minute read NAFEMS SGMWG - April 7th 2022 In the next part of this series, the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group hosted a discussion looking at code verification v solution verification. As well as reading the conversation here, you can watch the video on YouTube. The discussion features William Oberkampf (WO) & Gregory Westwater (GW), members of the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group Code Verification v Solution Verification: What's the difference? GW : Welcome again Bill. The last time we talked, you made some statements about code verification versus solution...more

  8. Simulation Governance is Key to Delivering Best-of-Class Products in the Age of COVID-19

NAFEMS Americas and Digital Engineering (DE) teamed up (once again) to present CAASE, the (now Virtual) Conference on Advancing Analysis & Simulation in Engineering, on June 16-18, 2020! CAASE20 brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, unlike any other, to share experiences, discuss relevant trends, discover common themes, and explore future issues, including: -What is the future for engineering analysis and simulation? -Where will it lead us in the next decade? -How can designers and engineers realize its full potential? What are the business, technological, and human enablers that will take past successful developments...more

  10. From SysML to Mars: Mars2020's MBSE Infusion

This presentation was made at the NAFEMS Americas CAASE19 Virtual Conference. Abstract Mars2020, NASA’s next Mars Rover inherited a majority of Mars Science Laboratory (MSL)’s Flight hardware and software. It also inherited the technical baseline described in disparate presentations, spreadsheets, document repositories, emails, and intelligent minds that have long left the project. The Mars2020 Systems Engineering leadership wanted to define their technical baseline in an integrative, data driven manner, that would incorporate the inherited design with the new science instruments and Martian sample caching system. The team chose to leverage advancements in MBSE to garner a better understanding...more
