  1. Why Do Design Optimisation?

Why Do Design Optimisation? ‘Optimisation’ is about selecting the best option from a range of possible choices. It is natural to consider this when designing a new product. As the old saying goes, ‘A job worth doing is worth doing well’. Why not produce a design that is the best in its class, if you have the means to do so? It may not cost any more in time and money to design and produce; and it may cost less. The customers for your product will be more please with it. Everyone will be happier, except your competitors. But how to make the selection, that is the question. Maybe in practise, you would settle for something that is some way short...more

  2. Strength Analysis of the Multi-purpose IC+ Railway Coach Carbody

This presentation was made at the NAFEMS Eastern European Seminar held in Budapest Hundary on November the 27th 2017. This seminar focused on the trends and the new methodologies of numerical simulation and answered the new objectives of the automotive industry. What are the new needs of the automotive industry and by what methods of numerical simulation will engineers be able to face these new elements?...more

  3. Is it just me – The Test Pilot's Retirement Party

This isn’t what I was going to write for this issue. In fact, I completed something else; it was about design decisions and how their results appear as if by magic in CAE feature trees. But it seemed to me that I was getting too negative in these pieces. You’ll hardly be surprised to hear that I think we have a few things to be negative about where we’ve got to as an industry. But we’ve also got a whole lot more to be pleased about, and maybe it’s better to look at that stuff more than occasionally. So, let’s look back at a reason we’ve got to be pleased with ourselves as an industry, and what our long dark nights of the soul have actually achieved. This article appeared in the January 2026...more

  4. Verification & Validation – An Introduction

Verification & Validation – An Introduction 7-minute read NAFEMS SGMWG - August 26th 2021 In the first of a series, the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group hosted a discussion introducing the concept of Verification and Validation. As well as reading the conversation here, you can watch the video on YouTube, as well as listen to the audio on the NAFEMS Podcast. The discussion was hosted by Chris Rogers, Chair of the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group, alongside members of the group, William Oberkampf (WO), Gregory Westwater (GW), Keith Meintjes (KM), and Alexander Karl (AK). How would you define the terms ’Verification’ and Validation’? Q (GW)...more

  5. Model Calibration and Model Validation - What's the Difference?

Model Calibration and Model Validation - What's the Difference? A Discussion with the NAFEMS SGMWG 12-minute read NAFEMS SGMWG - March 22nd 2023 As part of an ongoing series, the NAFEMS Simulation Governance & Management Working Group present a discussion about the difference between model calibration and model validation. As well as reading the conversation here, you can watch the video on YouTube. The discussion was hosted by Gregory Westwater (GW, Emerson Automation Solutions) and William Oberkampf (WO, consultant), both members of the NAFEMS S imulation Governance & Management Working Group GW: Model calibration and model validation, how do you define each? And what's the distinction...more

  6. Current & Perceived Future Challenges in Engineering Simulation Education

Academics Symposium: Discussion Session Current & Perceived Future Challenges in Engineering Simulation Education Jim Wood, JW Analysis We are keen to receive input from both industrialists and academics in this discussion session. Even if you can’t manage along, we would be happy to accept your input before or after the event. The call presentations contains a wealth or relevant topics. Meanwhile here are a few stimulating thoughts and questions … Do industrialists see any perceived shortcomings in new graduates in this area? Do industrialists feel that they have sufficient opportunity to influence University Programme/Course Committees? Has the design pendulum swung too far in general...more

  7. Hardware Requirements

    2. Hardware Requirements General Considerations In this chapter, we’ll discuss what hardware will provide you with the best finite element software performance. We will start off by providing you with an overview of the components and systems that we will be covering in more depth throughout the chapter. We will also start off with some basic guidelines to help you optimize your workstation configurations. (Please consider that this course has been created in 2020, some hardware specific considerations may not be relevant anymore.) Processing This section will provide some guidance as to which CPUs are most ideal for FEA as well as what options to consider. We will also go into some...more

  9. Unlocking the Full Potential of Modelling and Simulation in Your Organisation

You may be wondering, ‘Why should I be bothered about a Modelling and Simulation Strategy? I’m too busy actually doing the job! Our organisation just wants the results!’ The answer is that simulation is highly likely to be critical to your organisation’s success. It’s also highly complex and impacts the whole organisation. It consumes significant budget, resources and time throughout your product creation and delivery processes. Most importantly it impacts the performance of the products you deliver to your customers....more

  10. Simulation of ADAS Functions in Cutoff Situations

Abstract The laboratory of the Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd. located at the ZalaZONE proving gound has the goal to test and develop Automated Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems applications applying a Driver-in-the-Loop Simulator. In both topics we perform simulations and support the preparations of physical tests, further on we have our research and development topics. In our recent study we focus on to identify bottlenecks of the trending collision avoidance technology, which is one of the fastest growing ADAS feature field. Nowadays we have many different ADAS solutions which are working well on their own. Our main task now is to develop an intelligent autonomous driving algorythm...more
