  1. They've Found it! Beagle 2 Lander Found on Mars after 12 Years

They've Found it! Beagle 2 Lander Found on Mars after 12 Years Well time makes fools of us all. It didn't return calls, we didn't see it around - it was as if it had disappeared off the face of the planet (well, it had technically...), but the UK led Beagle 2 lander, which touched down on Mars on Christmas Day 2003 and hadn't been seen or heard form since, has been found by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). boo! you found me! (images courtesy of the Beagle 2 project) The discovery goes some way to solving the long-standing mystery of what happened to the lander after contact was lost after it's descent to the surface of Mars. Images show the Beagle 2 lander in what appears to be...more

  3. Aerospace Simulation Engineering: Navigating the Digital Thread

Aerospace Simulation Engineering: Navigating the Digital Thread Thursday, October 18th, 2018 Lynnwood, WA Overview Aerospace manufacturers and suppliers are facing an increasingly challenging and competitive marketplace as their products are becoming more complex via tighter integration of systems and cyber-physical environments. That being said, there are rising interests to incorporate Digital Threads as communication frameworks for sharing product lifecycle information seamlessly and Digital Twin methodologies for assessing virtually the expected and future operational physics-based capabilities of a product throughout its lifecycle. Utilizing these techniques in conjunction with the...more

  4. Large Eddy Simulation Awareness Day

Large Eddy Simulation Awareness Workshop Turbulence Modelling beyond RANS Large Eddy Simulation, LES, is fast becoming more readily available in the major commercial CFD codes and from the internet. Computer power is increasing rapidly too, at an affordable cost, making it potentially easier to run simulations using such methods. More CFD users are therefore becoming interested in learning about this method and its applications. While LES is very powerful it also requires some care to be used properly, as it is conceptually very different from RANS, the workhorse of industrial CFD. This seminar started by establishing and comparing the fundamental assumptions supporting RANS and LES and,...more

  5. Probabilistic reasoning and uncertainty quantification

    1. Probabilistic Reasoning This introductory section explains how probability can be used to model uncertainty in engineering analysis. Instead of treating uncertain inputs, observations or model results as single fixed values, we describe what we know and what we do not know using probabilities. The central idea is that a probabilistic model represents how we believe data are generated. Once data are observed, we can use statistical inference to update what we believe about the unknown state of reality. "There are known unknowns, and there are unknown unknowns." — Donald Rumsfeld, former U.S. Secretary of Defense Tools used in this course The course uses a small set of freely available...more

  8. Greenwashing

Greenwashing Let's talk about sustainability. At its core, it is about doing what we can to slow the depletion of natural resources. How we do this varies by use case. We could redesign a product to use less steel or switch to renewable resources like wood. We can work on the problem via the supply chain, sourcing material closer to home so it requires less fuel to reach us. We could embrace circularity, designing a product that is intended to be recycled so its components can be reused. Beyond product design, we might redefine the production process to use less electricity or water. There are many possible actions, each doing its part to address what can sometimes seem like an overwhelming...more

  9. The Evolving World of Simulation- When, How, How Much, and If

The Evolving World of Simulation- When, How, How Much, and If 4-minute read Sinothile Baloyi - July 31st 2024 Many great innovations emerge from wars and other existential threats, why exactly that is is complicated, but perhaps at a simplified level, it’s something to do with the fact that when it comes to eliminating real threat to life, there is no cost too great. Computer simulation is one such innovation that found in war an accelerant. During the Second World War and following a course in wartime electronics, physicist John Mauchly wrote a memo proposing an all-electronic calculating machine, and that’s how ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer), the first general-purpose...more
