NAFEMS Americas and Digital Engineering (DE) teamed up (once again) to present CAASE, the (now Virtual) Conference on Advancing Analysis & Simulation in Engineering, on June 16-18, 2020! CAASE20 brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, unlike any other, to share experiences, discuss relevant trends, discover common themes, and explore future issues, including: -What is the future for engineering analysis and simulation? -Where will it lead us in the next decade? -How can designers and engineers realize its full potential? What are the business, technological, and human enablers that will take past successful developments...more
"Simulation of Peristalsis" by Giulia Creed from The University of Surrey UK Student Award Winner In this series, we've asked some of the winners from the 2020 NAFEMS Student Awards to give us their thoughts on what winning the award means to them, and what they are looking forward to as they launch their careers in engineering analysis and simulation I really enjoyed my Medical Engineering degree and my time at university. I chose to study Medical Engineering at the University of Surrey because I felt that the degree’s comprehensive curriculum best matched my interests in engineering, the sciences and healthcare. I found that I enjoyed learning about cutting edge research and that I...more

Modelling Soil Structural Interaction during Tunnel Excavation - This seminar focused on numerical modelling of the complex interaction between soil and structure during tunnel excavation. This is a major talking point currently, with over 26 miles of tunnels being built under the UK'€™s capital city as part of Crossrail and numerous London Underground Station Upgrade projects. Ensuring that the tunnels are correctly designed is essential to ensure the safety of those involved in the tunnelling operation as well as ensuring that life above ground carries on without interruption. The event focused on modelling of the soil-structure interaction behaviour in tunnel construction, with...more

Analytical modeling and simulations are a part of most companies' product development process these days. Typically, there are a group of highly specialized CAE analysts that perform various physics-based simulations that consume significant budget resources, and time. If done correctly, the simulations are typically conducted early in the development phase in order to determine if a proposed solution will work under the desired boundary conditions. However, this may not be the case if your company is resource limited or directs most of the CAE resources to use simulations to assess post-test failures. Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) processes have been implemented within the product...more
