How To Understand Interactions Between The Mechanical System And Electrical Control Of A Motor Drive Using Full Fidelity Electrical And Mechanical Simulators

Author: Dheeraj Vemula - Altair

Abstract

In this presentation we will show the changes in electrical drive dynamics as a result of model simplification and linearization. With model simplification the frequency responses of the various systems will also change which can hide possible resonant interactions between them. A full fidelity multi-physics simulation of a motor drive includes the dynamic electrical response of the motor along with the mechanical resonance of the mechanical load. It is possible to have different model fidelities or simplifications for both the electrical and mechanical systems. For the electrical system it can be common to use ideal controllers and linear machine models, the mechanical system can also be represented by linear damping and spring coefficients with simplified torque-speed relationships. This presentation will introduce a workflow that will enable users to implement a full fidelity simulation of a switching inverter, a high-fidelity machine model derived from FEA, along with a full fidelity mechanical multibody simulation. Several case studies will be presented to show the dynamics. A broad case study for a granular material continuous mixer will be shown which links four physics solvers together: discrete element simulation, mechanical multibody, power electronics, and motor FEA. A second case study showing a motorcycle under hard acceleration on surfaces with different friction coefficients will link a power electronics solver with multibody and motor FEA.
