Abstract

Systems and Complementary Engineering Disciplines Interactions

This keynote will initially introduce elementary Systems Engineering principles and practices as they are, or should be, applied by the SE community. It will point to fundamental changes facing todays System Engineers due to broad trends, such as complexity increases and demands for more holistic, ecological, resilient and business oriented solutions. It will be demonstrated that there is no alternative to holistic end-to-end engineering approaches which address the entire system life-cycle.

The presentation then sketches the challenges of advancing Systems Engineering in the form of “Model based Systems Engineering” (MBSE). MBSE is understood as an interdependent element of Model based Engineering (MBE) which involves in the first instance technical and physics-based disciplines along with applicable programmatic elements needed for concept and product development, manufacturing, logistics and support services. The value of simulations, virtualization, application of emerging technologies such as AI, data analytics, digital twins and the advantages of single sources of truth for the evolving engineering practices is highlighted.

Finally, the keynote will briefly touch upon MBSE and MBE as elements of a broader industrial transformation process also involving project life-cycle management (PLM) and additional digital production and servicing assets. These assets, once seamlessly correlated, will strongly support the deep-rooted industry and government transformation towards digital enterprises.
