  1. Simulation-Based Digital Twins for Improved Asset Operation and Maintenance Management

NAFEMS Americas and Digital Engineering (DE) teamed up (once again) to present CAASE, the (now Virtual) Conference on Advancing Analysis & Simulation in Engineering, on June 16-18, 2020! CAASE20 brought together the leading visionaries, developers, and practitioners of CAE-related technologies in an open forum, unlike any other, to share experiences, discuss relevant trends, discover common themes, and explore future issues, including: -What is the future for engineering analysis and simulation? -Where will it lead us in the next decade? -How can designers and engineers realize its full potential? What are the business, technological, and human enablers that will take past successful developments...more

  2. Mohr's Circle - Talking Shop with Tony Abbey

Mohr’s circle seems to be a very unpopular topic in structural mechanics courses! Some view it as: arcane, procedural, confusing, no use in practical engineering Why bother with Principal Stresses, Maximum shears etc. – Von Mises is king!! Maybe you don’t want to go back to graphs. In this webinar Tony Abbey talks about why Mohr’s circle is useful today to help understand: What are stress transformations? Why do them? Tony's trying to give Mohr a boost here!...more

  3. What are the Chances of the Ship Snapping? - Considerations When Using Probabilistic Analysis

In the April 2019 issue of NAFEMS BENCHMARK magazine, two challenge problems are presented. The first one consists of two normal distributions, producing an analytical (theoretical) solution. The second one contains several distributions (normal, uniform and lognormal), and therefore an exact solution is not available. At the NAFEMS World Congress 2019 these problems were discussed and a few solutions were presented. In this presentation these solutions and additional ones are discussed in combination with the theoretical background and the pitfalls of these methods....more

  7. Scope of the HPC Performance Benchmark Initiative

Presentation made by I. Symington at the NAFEMS UK Seminar "Improving High Performance Computing (HPC) Adoption in Engineering Simulation" that was held in Manchester, UK on the 10th of February 2016. Seminar Description In recent years, a new business cliche has emerged: "To out compute is to out compete". In essence, the use of high performance computers for engineering simulation can help speed up design turnaround times, reduce time to market and increase competitiveness. The purpose of this seminar was to help promote the adoption of high performance computing throughout the engineering supply chain, from independent consultants to SMEs and large firms....more

  8. Why Do Design Optimisation?

Why Do Design Optimisation? ‘Optimisation’ is about selecting the best option from a range of possible choices. It is natural to consider this when designing a new product. As the old saying goes, ‘A job worth doing is worth doing well’. Why not produce a design that is the best in its class, if you have the means to do so? It may not cost any more in time and money to design and produce; and it may cost less. The customers for your product will be more please with it. Everyone will be happier, except your competitors. But how to make the selection, that is the question. Maybe in practise, you would settle for something that is some way short...more

  9. Strength Analysis of the Multi-purpose IC+ Railway Coach Carbody

This presentation was made at the NAFEMS Eastern European Seminar held in Budapest Hundary on November the 27th 2017. This seminar focused on the trends and the new methodologies of numerical simulation and answered the new objectives of the automotive industry. What are the new needs of the automotive industry and by what methods of numerical simulation will engineers be able to face these new elements?...more
