Abstract

Opportunities and Challenges in CFD Modelling for Oil & Gas Operations

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in the oil & gas industry as it move towards harsher environments, stiffer environmental regulations, and tougher business climates. From operations stand-point, safety of processes is of prime importance followed by commercial efficiency. Most of operations primarily involve flowing hydrocarbons, Computational Fluid Dynamics is gaining lot of momentum in supporting operational excellence - from understanding the integrity/safety risks to equipment designs to extracting optimum yields from processes. An overview on the scope of CFD modelling will be provided on specific topics for upstream and downstream applications such as multiphase flow in pipelines, erosion-corrosion, FIV/VIV, crude blending and fluid catalytic cracking. Emphasis will be laid on challenges faced in accurately predicting the phenomena of interest due to multiphase, multiphysics and multiscale aspects.
